Hi
Just a quick report from last night...Fished our club comp 7pm until midnight, tide 11.30 ish...
Warm and sunny, very calm...Had high hopes of some nice Plaice/Soul,
but walked over the beach and could not believe the number of nets, some were no more than 100yards from the shore...
I caught plenty of Makerel,Scad but nothing else!!
At our weigh in a few Soul managed to reach some anglers baits. But I would imagine the commercial boys bagged up.

Had our club comp at bexi yesterday, exactly the same problem. We fished the cogden end from 8am till 11pm,saw a net pulled up from our end right through to the car park, then he came back and dropped it from the carpark upto abbotsbury, shame really because it puts you in doubt before your gear has hit the water.I have nothing against people earning a living but id prefer them to be a mile or so off shore.

i always thought that therre was the boat had a size limit i mean like if the boat was bigger than 17ft it had to be a certain distance from the shore? worth checking it out for the next time

Not too sure mate but it wouldnt make a differance, have seen the trawlers as close as 100 yards off shore before, its an ongoing thing which i dont think we will see stopped in my life time.My heart sank in the morning, and the only thing which turned out to be worth the trip was the weather

Fished Cogden sat night with Deldiablo caught 1 plaice and 8 soles , quite a few nurds and dogs of course between us. Not the best session ever but atleast a few fish.
On the net front you hear it time and time again, putting it simply if the nets are that close thats where the fish are, so if the nets where shot a mile out at sea quite a good chuck to reach them , yes they obviously do stop a few fish though as proven not all.

100 yds would be great, my fave spots get netted from 30ft of shore...
regularly drop more than 1... blocking the fish runs completly...
we all need to make a living but if we all stop bothering to fish how many tackle shops etc are gonna go, the knock on effect could be the complete demise of sea angling :g:

Over the last 5-10 years more tackle shops have opened up on the south coast than have closed, mail order over time will have a greater effect on the industry than the commercial fishermen, more netsman have had to leave there jobs due to fish quotas etc., people will always fish go fishing and not just for the fish they catch.

you both make good points and i agree completly...
surely though if you want to sit at the sea for hours on end then people will take a book and a bbq... and not hundreds of pounds worth of fishing gear.
yes netting has been happening 4 ever but the nets have fewer fish these days and how many anglers say " 10 yrs ago we could catch a dozen cod/bass... whatever fish... in an eve... or it aint like it used to be..."
i aint a Green or enviromentalist, and i think the fishermen would agree that things need to change as we are visabley on a increasingly downward slope...
