Having been away from the sea for 3 weeks i couldnt wait to get out. So with a nice NW breeze forecast for Friday it was down first thing to colwyn bay to dig some lug for an evening sesh into darknes at the Morfa.Arrived to find perfect conditions

Baited up and cast out, after 10 mins decided to reel in and add some more worms but as i reeled in there was a cracking sound and i looked down to see the bale arm on my Mitchell Avocet had sheared off ......disaster  with no spare reel it was home time just wondering what might have been.Early Sat morning saw me back at the morfa to use up the bait but with flat calm, clear water it was more a case of just being nice to be there.Packed up after a couple of hours and on the way home i decided it was calm enough to get her indoors and the lad out on our little boat with a promise that we should get enough macky for dinner.

By 12.30 we were launching at Colwyn Bay and armed with a couple of boat rods with feathers(had also chucked a little 7ft spinning rod with 10lb line in just in case the lad got bored with his DS (damned computers) we trolled around all over the place for 1.5 hrs with little action on the fishfinder and half a dozen macks in the bucket.
It was then that i noticed a group of kittiwakes, terns and herring gull showing alot of interest in an area 200yds away so we went over to investigate,as we slowed down i noticed a huge swirl in the water 10 yds away ,then another and another, they were everwhere and there were large splashes as well as they hit the surface, Bass !!! and bloomin big ones at that. Never tackled up so fast in my life as i put a dexter type wedge on the little spinning rod with rather shakey hands and cast out 20 yds ..........within seconds BANG....... fish on, what a scrap on such light tackle. It was at this point that i realised that i had made the same error as i had on our maiden trip as we were only after mackies and the missus fluked a couple of Bass on feathers( one was lost) the error being NO LANDING NET !!!!......i did have a 1ft long home made gaff type hook (with a blunt tip) for beaching big fish by the gills. this was brought into action and landed a 4lb Bass. quickly off in persuit of the shoal the next cast an almost instant hit...this was much bigger and i feared for the rod for several minutes as he took line at will.

After a rather long fight i eased him towards the side of the boat,a fish of about 8-9lb then dissaster... he shook one last time and the hook came away:cry::cry::cry:

Next cast another fish lost after half a minute, followed by another landed.
By this time the mrs wanted in on the action so on went another wedge on her boat rod and we trolled back through the action and had simultaneous hits.hers seemed the bigger fish so i gave the lad my rod to hold onto and helped to land a nice fish of 5.5 lbs.
Then got my rod back and in came a 4.5 lber

after half an hour more the total was 6 landed and 5 lost. there must have been many dozens of fish if not over a hundred, but that was enough for now. With fish loving family nearbye and no fish at all in the freezer they were all distributed and will be enjoyed. Dont know how long it might be before my next one.

have read and heard about these shoals of voracious bass hunting in large groups but never thought i would see one close up like that.
So i went from never having caught one on a spinner/lure to getting 5 in a sesh. What amazing fights they put up on very light tackle ,so different to bringing even bigger ones in on a beachcaster.
A real day to remember.
with hind site it would have made some great action pics with that little rod bent over the side of the boat and of the fish on the surface etc but it was all a bit hectic at the time..........maybe next time (i wish)
