Just want to know the thoughts from experienced lure anglers. Do you think bigger lures mean bigger fish?
I've been doing a lot of fishing with Tobys and Dexters recently. i think the tobys are 18g and the dexters about 25g. I find i'm topping out at about 2lb for most fish i catch, with the occasional smaller fish, sometimes almost the same size as the lure, i.e very small.
I'm wandering if the biggest fish where i'm fishing are about 2lb, or if i bought say 25g tobys and maybe 35-40g dexters I would find bigger fish? Opinions appreciated.

in my opinon not necessarily, ive actually caught my biggest bass on a tiny toby, i think its just a case of matching the hatch so to speak. a big lure could however put off the smaller bass so your average size of catch would be bigger. i might be wrong however.

I see your point. I may try next time the fish are taking the normal size lure. I'll whack on a bigger one and see what happens - if i still catch fish of the same size, or catch less but bigger fish.

no i dont think it makes much difference, some days only small lures seem to work when the bigger ones are not getting takes, even big fish take small lures.

I have a theory that the bigger fish don't waste energy chasing small pray about, they may take a small lure if it's in front of their nose but wont put any effort into chasing it as they would use more energy than the potential meal would give them. It might explain why a lot more bigger fish are caught on bait compared to lures. It's only my theory so don't take it as gospel

I've had all sizes of fish on average sized plugs, from 2lb up to about 5lb. I've only ever had schoolies on very small plugs however (which I rate around the 2-4" sort of size).

I try the smaller plugs if there's nothing happening, and this usually gets me a small fish or two if all else fails. Whether this is because the bigger fish aren't present, I can't say.

No idea if this still applies with metals or not.

Ive had bass about 6-8 inches long on a plug not much smaller than the school bass, think its just the predator coming out in them that makes them hit the lure, irrespective of the size of the plug.
i would agree with this mate , had tiny bass on pound mac , on a boat , what were they thinking :eek:hmy:

my best ever bass came on a maria lasugunda , which is a big plug , but i have had a 12.2 on a single tiny rag worm , jigged for pollock .
Maybe a lot of big fish , is about being right place right time IMHO
