Wey its been ages since i been out fishing so me and jacky decided to book a hotel for the night so we could hit 3 marks in 2 days.
The first mark was dunstanburgh castle, apparently the deepest water on the east coast of England so must be home to some beastly cod(yessssss haha)
We got to this mark at 2pm bang on high tide, we got advised to cast either strait out to see or south for the cod coz casting north off the cliffs was more for coalies and smaller stuff. So we got set up with our beachcasters and a coolbag full to the brim with rag, lug, mussels, squid and cart, lucky buggers were spoilt for choice. I used my usual pennel setup but this time swapped the pulley rig for a clipped down rig. Jacky was fist off the mark with a megga cast PING!!!! Haha unlucky jacky, He cracked off. He blamed his new monofilament line i begged to differ i reckon the nutter was just too eager to get in the water and forgot to flick the bail arm haha. Anyways we fished the tide out for 4 hours and we both had a new species to add to the list, I was first with what im sure was a ling it wasn't big enough to keep or even measure but it was about 2 fish fingers long so would of made half a sarny lol.

Jacky was next with what looked like a little funny looking fat coalie(I'm not very good at identifying species so if anyone wants to look and correct me thats fine lol).
We had to leave after 4 hours to check into the hotel but I think this is a great mark and definitly worth an all day session.

We had a quick bite to eat in the hotel(hotel was also a Sambuca restaurant haha belta pizza for the lads) then went strait to the second mark a few miles up the road was seahouses harbour, pretty similar layout to cullercoats harbour. You need to walk round and up and over the south harbour wall onto the rocks and fish it at low water onto the kelp beds.
We fished this mark as long as we dared just over 2 hours up from low water. Coz it was dark and you can definitely get cut off if your not carefull. I cant remember what started the game but we stopped fishing together and started fishing against each other haha it was a race for the next fish. And we stopped sharing tactics and wouldn't even tell each other our bait choices and hook sizes, it was very competitive hahaa. Wasn't really, I blanked and jacky caught a whiting f*****g b*****d haha 2-1 to jacky.
On the way back we realised there was loads of random gaps in the rocks like caves with 3-5 meter straight drop it would be lethal if you slipped or missfooted a step.
We receded back to the north harbour wall, which I will never fish ever again coz its terrible. It was that quiet i would of even gladfully welcomed a crab or 2 just for game.. We stayed there till 1.30am then went home.

We got home at 2am and set our alarm for 4.30am. We came to fish not sleep haha.. the 3rd mark was cullernose point(our favourite mark).
Basically im not gunna go on and on about me blanking and jacky catching another fish.
In total we fished 18 hours on our 2 day trip and it finnished 3-1 to jacky haha.
We fish together really it was just a joke, not competitive or anything or serious and i wasnt really trying and it didn't mean anything that jacky beat me and im totally fine with that. :ughdance:

Again im gunna say that all the marks we fished looked like great cod marks and are really good places to fish and apparently double figure cod are getting pulled from these marks all the time. So please don't let my reports put you off going to any of these marks coz 1 day I will start catching some fish worthy of a north east catch report and it will be in one of these marks hopefully.

Anyone wants details of marks with where to park ect. Just pm me and il be more than happy to share.

Well done mate. The brown skinny, slimy one is a rockling (did it go for mussel by any chance ?) but the other one - the fat Coalie - I have no idea. Whatever it is you have done well to catch one. Same for the Whiting, I never usually fish further south than Cullernose and I have ever see a Whiting let alone caught one

The fat coalie is a pouting. They are prolific along the south coast but I’ve never caught that many in Northumberland. They can come with bar stripes that fade as they die. Great conger bait! A decent size one is also good eating. Member of the cod family but greatly overlooked must be eaten fresh and gutted immediately if destined for the table.

Hahaha thanks lads i really thought I smashed it with guessing my species this time. I was that confident i even started showing jacky pictures if a ling over dinner to show him what I had caught haha none of us noticed any different. Its much much harder than it looks identifying fish. Im dedinitly going to invest in a big fat book of fish species. My rockling was actually caught on quite a big cocktail bait but I always have muscles on the outside of my baits(just stuck on the sides then elasticated) coz its a nightmare to do anything else with really. But i bet thats what it went for and muscles are defo my favourite bait choice.
Ghillie what actually is a coalie mate? Is it not a species? Coz it's always caught me out that 1!! coz when I research it, it says a pollock is a coalie but I thought a coalie was a coalie coz when I was on roker pier the lads were all saying I had a coalie, none of them actually said it was a ????, part of the coalie family..
would it of had a propper name but part of the coalie family which is part of the cod family? Haha this gets way to puzzling.

No but pouting coalies and pollock are separate species however all of them are part of the cod family

I did exactly the same last year mate I caught a rockling off Beadnell and had never seen one before so thought it was some kind of baby Ling. In my first year fishing I also confidently announced having caught a dozen Codling on metal lures thinking I'd cracked it and they turned out to be Coalies.

Basically a Coalie looks like this. White belly, silver flanks with a darker top and a straight line down the side of it. Incredibly like your mate's Whiting in fact :happy:

A Pollock has a similar profile but they have a gold sort of tint along the body before you get to the black top section. As colours can vary according to habitat the best distinction is the lateral line down the side of its body. This is not straight on a Pollock, it curves up towards the head. The pic below is my first ever Pollock. Only took me about 75 hours and £100 worth of lost Toby lures

Haha excellent mate im glad I'm not the only one who struggled to get to grips with species lol. At the time when the fish comes out the water im pretty confident what the fish is but then everytime i do a report now I just know in my mind someone is going to correct me lol and its a good laugh because this time I thought I had atleast 2/3, its possible i got 0/3 haha im gunna buy some books me.
Did you take them codcoalies home for dinner though mate haha? Coz apparently coalies are propper tastey just as nice as cod if not nicer mate(that's what AndyRVTR told me, I havnt actually caught 1 big enuf to eat yet).

Haha yeah it was great mate, I would of preffered more fish but it's not all about the fish for me it's getting out to different spots and we had a good laugh. I do wish we spent more time at dunstanburgh castle coz its a class spot and well worth a full day trip. Its a mile walk from the nearest carpark but you have a kayak so you could go all them places from craster harbour its only a fiver to launch from there. Gunna have to give that a go 1 day when I come into some money lol

What an absolultey super report and pictures, well done. Ill be out Tuesday morning but unsure as to where just now, maybe just Hartley island but may give myself a kick up the hootenany and go to cullernose for the full flood.

Yes Mickey ive fished it a few times. Personally i dont do well there, maybe one day i will change my opinion on the place. Tremendous views though bud.

Class arnt they mate. It's got mixed reports some people love it some dont, personally I think it's mint just because it's one of the first places we fished and we mannaged 3 codling only about the 2lb mark but it was still good for us. Some of the local lads like to fish about 100metres strait opposite on the flat rocks low water mark sort of straight down from where you park coz they say it's better for the big cod but we've never tried it coz apparently it's really heavy ground tackle graveyard ha. But you preffer them places so maybe a better spot for you marra. Let me know how you get on if you decide to pop up there mate
