Hi all, I am looking at buying a new rod for shore fishing on rough ground and I would be grateful for any reviews by WSF readers.

Cheers

Hi Redhead. The old model Conoflex Nemesis + gets my vote. Can handle rough ground and snags but still retains excellent bite detection. Can cast 8 ozs and a large bait but is still not an out and out poker. I have a pair that I use for Conger and Huss which must be around eight years old and are still going strong. Of all my rods, these would be the last to go. Hope this helps.

or if you dont fancy spending too much of your hard earned cash, you could consider an abu beach rod, look for a conolon Xodus - this thing will handle absolutly anything! you should be able to pick one up for between £100 and £150

This question has been asked numerous times around this forum.
Apparently there are a few good rough ground rods in the RON THOMPSON range(accellerator i think).
Might be worth a look, there are always plenty of bargains and offers around with these rods.

None was taken, hence my tongue in cheek response, the smilies??

I have been called many things, one time I was called normal and an angler.

Without my hair I would not go near any rough ground marks, how is that Mr. Moderators :) :)

If he dicedes to go for the Carbon Metal Express, just make sure that his timoing during the cast is very good, because, if your timing is off, your cast will go all over the place and your shoulders will ache. Not to sure if that is true for the other rough ground rods!

Fox Rockrunner, but then again it had to be really

It also depends on what kind of rough ground you are fishing. If you are talking about fishing boulders, weed etc off a beach or just some standard rock fishing then most of the modern beachcasters will be able to cope with this. If you are looking more towards the hardcore rock fishing, deep ledges, kelp, conger and tope fishing, then it is well worth looking at something more specialist that is designed to do that job.

I'd suggest you pop into a tackle shop and have a gander at what’s available, there will also be lads there that can talk to you about their experiences regarding the rods. The best thing to do is to be honest with yourself and try and find a rod that suits you. After all fishing is about enjoyment and fishing with kit you don't like is quite frustrating! Designing a rod to suit all is probably the most challenging part of tackle design.

Some tackle dealers will let you have a few casts with a rod before you buy it, and so they should if they want your money! Although its freshwater (Q groans) whenever I buy a fly fishing rod I always go through the following sequence. Firstly I find some catalogues and make a list of the rods in the same price category, once I've got the list I'll ring around some of the shops that let you have a play with the rods and see which ones they stock and what they have available. Most of the time one shop will have 90% of the list. I then go down and have a good couple of hours playing with the rods (sometimes testing as many as 5 or 6) and then decide which one I like the best.

Although user comments and reviews are useful you can't beat giving them a bash yourself :D

Happy hunting, hope you find the right rod and that its VERY lucky for you :)

Agree with you Mike, if you know someone who has a rod that you interested in, try and have a go at it to see if you get on with it! After all you are the one who will be using it!

Hey Mike Jnr, Cheers for your advice and knowledge, I fish the N/E Coast of Scotland and other parts of the country I use a Greys Apollo Mk 2 and it is a great rod for the ground. I was asking for other advice from fellow posters to see what types of rods they would recommend for this use. I am heading down to Whitley Bay for a competition at the start of September and was looking to get advice on marks down there, have you fished around that area??

Cheers
