Hi Chris

Well I am glad you got sorted and hopefully it will serve you well. Good to hear you got it checked out and also had a sea trial and that it went ok.

Good luck in your new boat and keep us posted on how you are getting on

You won't go far wrong with a Shetland 535, very sea worthy boats and very stable, although that stability is in part due to the weight of the boat and you will need a 60hp or 70hp engine to give it some speed, I've seen posts on here saying that they have 25hp & 40hp engines on these boats, but having owned one for 8 years I wouldn't go out the 12 miles or so to my marks with anything less than the 60hp I've got and I wish I had gone for a 70hp engine.

Fully loaded with two guys I can get about 23 knots at WOT

The only thing you need a aux to do... Get you out of sh*t if you engine ever plays up!! ?
Or if it is a 4 stroke aux to use it for trolling if your main engine is a carbed 2 stroke that fouls plugs if run at low speeds for any length of time.
Mariner, Mercury & Tohatsu 4 strokes of 4/5/6hp are all the same engine (they are all Tohatsu with different paint schemes) so if choosing any of these 3 makes there is no weight penalty for going for a 6hp over a 4 or 5hp.
Also a 6hp has 50% more power than a 4hp so will get you out of bother quicker or against stronger tides.
Just something to consider.

Hi Chris well you've finally made the plunge good on you. I will part some advice that was given to me all be it I ignored this advice lol and I spent a small fortune on it. Only spend enough money on it to get you up and running safety. Ask anyone on here "no one keeps there first boat"

Good boat Chris, yeah Shetland are tried and tested mate.
A new set of plugs could be the answer but if not the problem could be where the motor has been stored tilted and a residue of oil seeps down to the bottom carb. Get the float out and thouroughly wash with neat petrol.
Oh yes and dont forget the Moet lol.

Are you sure them figures are right with your 60hp motor? The main reason I ask is I had a 535 sheltie, and fully loaded with 125 litres of fuel tons of leads tons of fishing gear and two hefty blokes I would get near 26/27 knots out of mine, and that was only a 60. my mate has one with a 40 on it and he gets about 22/23 knots flat out but cruises at 16 knots

Wow, I wish I could get even 25 knots, but the GPS says I'm doing 23 knots at WOT, my mate has a 535 with a 40hp and he gets just under 20 knots.

My boat weighs just under 1800lbs fully laden and to be fair my engine is propped for about 4800rpm at WOT, but I'm hoping by not revving it to bits I'm not stressing the engine as much, which is probably the main reason I'm not getting more speed out of it.

Hello Steve, the prop on your boat is too big mate, you are putting more strain on the motor by swinging a prop thats too big, especially when getting it on the plane. When you are at full tilt and doing 4800 revs the motor is trying to rev at the max. I would get the right prop asap mate, you will see the difference straight away.

What engine is it exactly and what is the Wot quoted by the manufacturer? also propping it right will get you more fuel economy.
