Up at 4.30am Saturday, on the water at 5.15am, caught a few Mackerel for bait. After a few stops on the way, I ended up finding a great wreck 4 or 5 miles off Beachy Head way and spent an hour or so drifting catching nothing but Pout so I stuck half a Mackerel on and this beauty was the result, first drop. It's the first decent fish I've caught since getting the boat and it made all the frustrating trips and weekends not being able to get out worth while. Really good fight, first time I've had to play with the drag. With a 25lb mono trace, I think the circle hook saved the day as an hour later on a different wreck, I lost what felt to be a bigger fish 2/3s of the way up.

Back to the marina at 5.15pm, 12 hours doing what's becoming an obsession...

Went out Sunday and caught his little brother:

I used a wire trace on the 20lb rod on Sunday but caught this on a light rod with a mono trace again. Do most people use wire traces or just a thicker mono trace? Judging by their teeth, any contact with them would see it gone in no time...

Well done with your Tope
Been catching loads and loads of them as of late.
I use 200lb mono trace(don`t like crimps) about 5-6ft long.

I got Enzo200500 some and even manged to get Andy (gs425e) in on a few.

All have been between 5 and 6 miles out. Still looking for the bigger ones. Tried a spot last week for some bigger ones 30lb+ but there was too much tide.

The small ones are good fun on light gear, I was even getting them on a 2oz spinning rod for a laugh.:fishing:
