Any tips?

Best way to retrieve, slow with slow pulls on the rod, or fast twitching of the rod on retrieve etc?

Probably targetting cod, pollock, etc

No doubt will try and get mackies for bait first but i dont think we need to worry too much about technique for them

sorry you never got any replies sport. bit of a shame really but happened to me also recently. how we ever going to learn is beyond me.

Sorry, I did not even see this post until now. Did you mean retreiving shads and lures?
If you do then the best way is a steady retrieve. Shads should be reeled in quite fast whereas redgills and similar should be done a lot slower. If you get a take then just continue reeling and lift into the fish. Do not strike at it as you may well pull it away from a fish that is just checking the lure out before taking it.
