hi..on my picton the steering is situated on the left, with the lever control left of the wheel to..im very cack handed with my left hand and
far more abled with my right..so i wish to move it to the right hand side of the boat..
i have no qualms about relocating the lever box..but ive tried to look online to see if the steering can be located on the right to...i can see that the streering rod to the outboard will have to change sides
but i was wonder ( its a ultraflex steering system)...can the steering cable hub? be moved to as it will need to be reversed can they be..or is it a new right handed steering needed..

Your "right hand down a bit" will end up as a "left hand down a bit" most confusing! I did it on my Dell Quay & went across Swansea Bay like the Bismark, took me all day to get used to indicating left then turning right!

I think the teleflex steering controls are set up for right hand use normally, but you get an adaptor that can change it over to left? Thats what I think I remember having to do on my last boat anyway? If thats right then you should have all the bits required and just need to take the 'adaptor' off the helm.

the helm control your telly flex goes in has 2 screws in the same place opposite each other . these hold the outer cable in place with the inner cable going throw a geared pulley and thus giving you steering . its just a case of undoing the screws and winding out the cable then winding it back in on the other side opposite where the cable came out of

Hi Andy,
I am fitting my new Teleflex NFB and though I bought my steering for the Stbd side the instructions say "Starboard is preferred in order to Balance Engine Torque"

hi.. many thanks for the info i will check it out ..
which end then is best to disconect the cables from lever box at the o/b or box..
Personally i would disconnect from the o/b,they will probably need adjusting when you refit anyway & the adjustment is on the o/b end. When you cut the new hole through the splashwell for the steering make sure it's in the same position as the original (but on the other side)because of the tilt:)

Just a thought Andy but as the steering is going to be removed & re-routed, & I assume that you intend to keep this boat a good while why not replace the steering. You may find the cables are the wrong length anyway if you run them up under the gunnel & you don"t know how old they are.
A complete non feedback system (including the helm) would be about £170. Worth it IMO as you will know that the steering is A1 & is going to last a good few years.

Hi Andy,
I agree with Headlight about renewing your steering,.. Last time home I took my new buy out in the Humber for a run and bu99er me the steering went after 2/300 yards,. found out that it had been bodged to make it work, it was fun coming back into a creek using my aux and I also sat facing the wrong way to steer my big engine...

What I mean is that without knowing the history of the steering aboard you will never know when your steering will go wrong ,Luckily mine went wrong at such a short distance from my launch site, That day I was intending to go quite a few Nm,s to test the boat/engine ..... doesn,t bear thinking about..

My New Teleflex NFB on a 4.5 m steering cable and an upgrade to a better steering wheel cost me £208 inc P&P,......... I would have paid double that Whilst in the busy shipping lanes of the Humber with my Svincter Valve wide Open ....

Just seems to make sense to me KB that as Andy is basically going to strip the boat out to not far off a bare hull that renewing as opposed to re-using is the way to go (especially seeing as he already know"s that the boat has been neglected). That way he will know that everything is new & has been installed correctly. It will give him peace of mind.
I have discovered some "interesting" things on used boats that I have bought in the past !
