as i release 99.9% of the fish i catch i was wondering wether anyone knows of any fish tagging schemes currently running around our area for shore caught species as i would be very keen to take part and help out as much as i could with previous catches, locations ect, if anyone has any info weather it be a student study or an organisation any chance you could post it or a link to another site?

i would also like to know weather anyone has caught a fish in our area which already had a tag in/on it

cheers

Excellent that you release most of your fish m8, most fish caught off the shore are too small to tag I reckon, the only exception to this is probably tope, the west wales guys might be able to offer more info on this m8

Hiya,

As far as I know there are only 3 tagging programmes running in the Uk that involve anglers, there is the Bass Tagging, The UK Shark Tagging Programme http://www.ukshark.co.uk/ and the Common Skate tagging programme http://catchalot.co.uk/tagindx.htm
Never heard of bass tagging Dave, but dont doubt you, how on earth do you tag a bass ? the problem I reckon is that the info gathered could be detrimental to their conservation ?

Excellent link m8, didnt realise tags could be so small without damaging the fish, but I am concerned that data collected may do more harm than good if it is freely available
i see where your comming from, but the way i was looking at it is if we can find out more about breeding cycles and season we may be able to do something about protecting more areas from trawling and gill nets

i did see one on the net about thornback rays in the thames eastury not sure weather it was aimed at shore or boat anglers just wondered if anything like that was happening over here?

i would like to help with the bass tagging but i only ever seem to catch them by accident! lol i've seen they do something with the scales from bass to see how old they are how much they grow in a season ect apparently there scales are like the rings inside a tree when looked at under a microscope

mad hey!

There can only be one tosser who catches pin codling that have taken the hook down but cut the whole trace off and threw it back. Ive caught two of these fish now from the same spot, with a metre of 50lb line hanging from it. If this nerd would own up we could find out where he caught them and when and compare them with where I caught them. This would be like tagging only not as humane.

Why do they do this?? Its just as simple to cut the trace at the eye of the hook.
