hello chaps,i was just wondering if anyone uses a van for fishing.i always wanted to buy one,but i dont find any place on the web, which would tell me the van insurance groups, like the parkers tells me for cars.so i could find out which van is cheap to buy and cheap to insure.or if there is not a page like that,in your experiences, what vans are very cheap to insure and how?some people told me,if i havent got a company and i am not self employed, that the insurance will be very expensive.is that true?or i can have van as a hobby car?thanks in advance and sorry for keeping you asked about cars over and over again...:)

Whatever you do, do not buy a minibus. I have a minibus and the insurance is sky high, even for social and domestic use, and even though I reduced the seating from 9 to 6 places. It will be converted to a fishing camper before next year's policy is due for sure....

Dont go for the smaller vans ...you may as well get an estate as theres no more room in them. For cheapness try to find a "classic van" ( pre 72) such as a sherpa or transit . Reason for getting a pre 72 then you dont have to pay road tax and you get classic car insurance. Dont know how much it would cost for a van but my brother in law has two 1960s porsches and they cost hm about 300 quid the pair . Only stipulation is a maximum 10,000 miles per year . I think you would be pushed to do that per year in a fishing hack. I have a sherpa and it takes my zippies no trouble , tackle boxes etc up one side and a camp bed the other. Oh and dont do as my mate did and buy a van with a bulkhead behind the seats then lock yourself out keys in the back. Aa had to open the front doors and cut through the bulkhead to get in as he had tamperproof locks on the back/ side door to protect his site tools, he managed to persuade them to cut the bulkhead horizontally though and now has pipe insulation to protect the edge so he has space for the rods and also a bit of privacy if sleeping in the back. If sleeping in the back make sure its ventilated stops all the condensation and clears the farts after a few bitters and a curry!

don't always count on cheap insurance for vans! costs me more than my old people carrier, I went with a local co since they are to hand and were only about £50 more than the go compare type quotes but, i'm still looking at £500 f/comp with full and protected ncb on a lwb 03 vivaro!

have yet to make it more fishing gear friendly but, that's part of the plan!

that said, people carriers or estates will get more in and are far more versatile than a van, ie, passengers, i've had both and either work well, 4-5 people plus gear if using a roof rack for the rods.

if ya wanna sleep i your car then get the windows tined with the money you'll save! van prices are holding quite high at the mo where-as cars are not, if i didn't need my van for business i'd've gone back to a merc estate or similar!

detroit....

insurance will depend wholly upon your age, No of years driving, amount of no claims bonus, vehicle type, make, engine size and a miriad of other things,

i'm 36, have full no claims (9yrs for ins purposes but over 17 in fact), have been driving since 18, without my one conviction and 6 points my insurance would be £400, with my conviction its £500, if i didn't have my no claim bonus i'd be looking at almost £2000!!!

start small dude,

mine would be just a fishing truck and thats it, i use my work van to plod around usually...cant put my gear in the back of the van though cos during the day its full of clinical waste (amputated bits of people, virus', dirty needles etc) and dont fancy covering my gear in all that junk :yucky:

hi, i got the van from a well known auction site. as its being converted the insurance is a lot cheaper than a van. the fellow also sells the ex police dog handler vans , citroen and peugot small medium van. extra lwb, 4x4 transits and vitos. being ex police the vans are all serviced with genuine parts most are low milage ( my 02 has 43000) some have seats in. well worth a look. got van for £3600 clean as a whistle. i was in motor trade 16 years panel beater-fitter and i was very impressed with condition of van. have a look.

I should probably add that I do have my own business use insurance for the van but, it is very hard to get private policvies on commercial vehicles. I wanted to insure as a private vehicle as i intend to convert it to be a part time camper but no-one will insure a commercial vehicle as private and then allow business use, it's either business or private with commies and no inbetween, not worth gettting it wrong!

just to clarify, the reason why my first years insurance was so cheap on the van (insured class 1 business) was the no claims from the car was carried over then when i stacked the van they wiped off all the no claims hence 600 odd quid now.

I appreciate that dude, my IN10 conviction (idiot insurers of mrs car took me off as a named driver without notice at renewal) loads aprox 20% onto the premium, even so, a larger van like a transit or the vivaro/traffic style is gonna be a fair bit more than a berlingo, more to do with load capacity and weight really, the bigger the van, the havier it's likely to be and the more damage it's gonna do when it tails into a queue of cars!
