A bit about myself......

Name Pete Berry age 66

I worked for the AA as a breakdown patrol for 40 yrs now retired and living in Lanzarote for the last 7 years.

I've fished since the age of five mainly on the southwest Welsh marks, I did lots of club matches, casting tournaments, rod building reel tuning and conversions etc, etc
I'm a registered Sea Angler Magazine casting instructor and have a PB of 274 yards yes I'm still on old money it sounds more than meters

I invented the Gemini genie rig clip system and derivative's in 1994 which won Emap tackle accessory of the year award in 1996 (my 15 minutes of fame) after I linked with Tony Caton the owner of Gemini Tackle (RIP) who put them into production.
The clips are still a top seller 25 years on with lots of copies out there.

LIVE BAIT FISHING IS LEGAL IN THE CANARIES BUT STICK TO THE LEGAL SIZE LIMITS AND DONT USE ENDANGERED SPECIES.

Looking for cheap very good and spotlessly clean accommodation room only. My mate Will has this which is 5 minutes walk for the west coast marks I fish and a 5 minute drive into playa blanca town.

Dont book it via this link contact me and I'll put you in touch with Will as it'll be cheaper.

For anyone coming over to Lanza wanting any advice, help or would like to meet up to fish I regularly fish from the shore mainly with live bait and lures, being retired luckily I can and do fish most days (usually at first light) so ask away I'll do my best to help.

I am no guide, I do not charge for my help advice or taking peeps fishing though I have been known to except the odd bottle of Bacardi purely for medicinal reasons:confused::D:D

I don't post mark locations on the forum or pictures showing land marks as this would upset the natives but I'm more than happy to show individuals marks I fish.

When I first moved here what I knew about lure fishing could have been written on a postage stamp but thanks to Jeroen and Jamie I got quickly up to speed on what to use and where to fish.
Nearly 7 years on and with over 2000 sessions under my belt I've learnt a thing or two on fishing Lanza and continue to do so.

Fishing licence.....
It is the law so get one but it is a pain in the arse going to the town hall then to the bank then back to the town hall it can easily take most of a day so if you don't want the hassle of having to get one yourself then look here and get Sunil to sort it for you ......
http://www.spanishfishinglicence.com/

Here's a run down of what I use here ....
Rod, my current personal preference is a AFAW Mk1 15/55g 8ft which for me is the perfect length, I have others too but it's my favourite and handles all the lures I use here. I can use it all day without it tiring my arms, has great balance, feel and makes working a lure is easy.

Reels, I've seen off a Shimano stradic 5000 the first year then two Biomaster 5000xg's in the 2nd and 3rd year they feel like cement mixers now :frown: so I've gone for a change and have been using a Daiwa BG 3500 (similar size to a shimano 5000) it's done over 400 sessions and is still working well.
Last year I decide to try some very cheap reels from Aliexpress which are proving every bit as good as reels costing 5 times as much.

Line, 100yds of 12lb mono backing topped with about 150yds of 20lb 8 strand braid I then use a 6...8ft, 40lb + flouro coated mono leader (Asari) tied with my variation of the FG knot see my vid....

A Gemini Genie clip tops it off! My preference is the small snood clip which I slightly modify making the gape a bit bigger to accommodate the attachment to a sg 29g head as it has quite thick wire. I also bend the tag end out a little which makes it easier to change lures.
They've handled all the fish I've caught here without a single one straightening or breaking something we've seen happen to some other make clips too many times over the past 5 years like these

If I want a stronger clip I find the standard Genie link clip is ok but I find it a little too big for lure fishing so I make my own as I used to in the early 90's when I first developed the system
The two clips on the left are the standard Gemini clips

Here's how I made them then and now

Knots, I only use two the FG (imo is the best and strongest) as above for tying leader to braid and a uni knot for clips hooks etc, forget blood knots you'll lose fish!

Lures, AH! where do I start!
Savage gear 10cm lemon back bodies mated to a 29g head also eco gear pink power shads eels same heads
These have taken a lot of fish over the last four years and anything that swims here will gladly take one if it's in the mood .
I fish them at various depths, fast, slow, jigging, sink and draw etc etc. They are particularly good at first light but will catch throughout the day.
I then usually switch to a variety of different lures .... shoreline shinners, 40g jigs, surface skimmers, needle nose skimmers, 40g heavy sinking minnows etc etc etc.
Lure weight size type etc varies vastly according to conditions but all have one thing in common bright flashy colours work best for me, must be a decent weight and cast well.
A stinger on an sg eel makes a big difference on turning takes into hook ups and landing a fish especially barracuda which tend to hit the eel from behind and just nip at the tail
This is how I attach the stinger to the sg heads

One of the most asked questions I get is what lures work here
I used to use top end brands but fishing everyday means they don't last long and the cost was rocketing so now I either make my own, use cheap rubbers with jig heads like ecogear power shads or Savage gear lemon back eels or the like.

I've been asked several times how I make the stingers here's how I do mine

Note the position of the hook it won't impede the tail action and back tangles are rare
The heat shrink tube is there to prevent the hook swivelling to stop it hooking into the eel
The hook is fitted so the under body of the eel sits between the V of the treble when water pressure pushes it back towards the tail
The wire is Gemini 6"/150mm 18 gauge stainless steel cut into three, 50mm pieces

I'm also a big fan of chinky copies I've used them for 6 years caught loads of fish with them and the prices are amazing.

Fishing with bait
There's huge rays, sharks, Moray eels and a host of other speciest to be had on bottom legered fish baits close in a 10....30 yard cast is all that's needed
Ballooning a bait is very effective it's a method I use to cover a lot of water this is how I rig it using both dead and live baits.

20ft leader tied to the braid using my version of the FG knot 2..3ft from the fg tie a 3 turn overhang knot to act as a fixed stop.
Then on goes a
bead
Clip
Bead
Small sliding weight
Next tie another fixed stop 3ft from the end
Then the hooks
I use circle hooks (love these, quite brilliant) when the fish takes the bait the hook is nearly always caught in the side of the mouth.
When the fish runs against the resistance of the balloon it pops the balloon from the clip allowing you direct contact with the fish.
No need to strike but wait 15....20sec leaving it run before lifting into.
Screenshot_20200104-170602_Video Player.jpg

Screenshot_20191229-042437_Video Player.jpg

The smaller hook is used to mount the bait leaving the larger lower hook free.

Car hire, https://autoreisen.com/car-hire/car-hire.php is probably one of the best and inexpensive when off peak times pick up at the airport on arrival and drop back when leaving
book it on line before coming not at the airport otherwise it'll cost a lot more.

Jamie again with a very nice brace of spotted bass which apparently make excellent eating.
I've never caught one myself so I've added it to my bucket list.

Hi Sellos, yes I've seen live baiting being done though not very often and I'm a law obiding citizen so don't do it myself.
Bare in mind, most sessions I fish the coastline is practically deserted so I don't see many peeps fishing anyway.
Personally I've never heard that anyones been nicked for doing it.
I've no idea how many Bonito I've had.

I've changed a lot of my lure hooks and used these as replacements
£9.49 | 40pcs 5/0 Mustad Fishing Hook Stainless Steel Tuna Circle Fishing Hook Barbed Hook For Fishing https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/bsGjlOkt
Top grade stainless which doesn't rust, hook ups are awesome which get them in the scissors every time
I paid £6 for the first lot but I've found the price keeps jacking up
Time to message the shop I think and give him a :(
This usually gets a drop to the original price

Juan Martinez, I'm curious as are some other members, why do you put up a disagree on posts when I put reports of fish caught without giving an explanation as to why?
You did this several times last year and never replied to the question?
Seems a very strange action considering this is a fishing forum?????

Hi Pete
An interesting and informative post, thank you. I’m a newcomer to sea fishing so please forgive me if this is a dumb question, why do you use a 40lb leader with 20lb braid? If you had to pull for a break would it not be the braid that gave way? I’m guessing it’s because your fishing over rough rocks maybe?

Also, can you give a link to your video of the fg knot please.

Hi DFL welcome, first name?
No it's not a dumb question, your correct one of the reasons is the rocks, also most of the fish we catch here have a right ol' set of dentures, thin leaders won't stand up to them.
Bluefish will bite through 100lb leader with ease but if you use a short wire trace to stop them I find takes nose dive.
When they are about I use quite long lures with the hooks fitted to the rear this helps keep the leader out of harm's way.
If the lure snags and I have to go for a straight pull breakout the 3 turn uniknot I use at the clip will give before the braid or fg knot.
I can put a stupid amount of pressure on before the knot actually gives far more than the fish.
So it's just a case of tying another clip on and I'm back in business pronto.

Much appreciated.

PS I have found your Genie clips a godsend. Having arthritic fingers some clips are devilishly hard work to use, not any more with the Genie!

What a great post!
I fished fuerteventura for a week last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Hopefully try Lanza next year. Would definitely like to fish with you and learn a few things.
