Some say catch and release which I think is a bit harsh. Eat a some and release the rest. Take especial care when unhooking undersized fish that take a long time to grow such as bass. If the hook can't be got out cut the line as close to it as you can. It will rot out in a couple of days - so don't be tempted to use stainless hooks. It just isn't worth pulling any fishes guts out for the sake of the price of a hook.
