Edgey continued his practice of being a Club Tart by joining Sharkboy’s club Boscombe and Southbourne Angling Club today.

Went out with the Phil, Chris, Gary, Mathew (Phil’s son), Peter and Steve today on Pat Manley’s boat M.V. Ooker out of Poole today.

The total catch was 144 Bream, 1 Goby, 1 dogfish, 1 garfish, 3 Wrasse. 12 Bream I think, were kept, certainly not more.

Chris caught an incredible 63 of them, on at least two occasions each being double and triple shots.

Edgey had a 900% increase in turnover on his first Bream trip a week ago, by catching 9 to about 2lbs, all returned. Freezer is full at the moment.

The weather was fantastic, the company great and the Skipper Pat, certainly knew what he was doing. We were hemmed in by some 25 other boats, most of whom were not more than about 40 yards from us, yet Pat put us on two cracking spots and we almost certainly caught the most fish. Only two anglers, (not me) lost two rigs between them all day.

Gary was the loser for the day with one Bream, but it was his first trip out.

Most successful bait was undoubtedly Chris with his cuttle fish and rag cocktails. Others were using squid, squid and rag or plain rag.

I used combinations of all three, but the most successful for me was a tip I picked up from Peter Churchill the week before, which was squid heads, sliced in half long ways. I didn’t have any cuttle-fish, but next time I will find some some-where, any one know of any suppliers, please let me know.

P.S. The club are looking for new members and the average trip costs only £24.00 plus bait. Membership is £12.00

144 fish on one boat, 25 other boats..... and the fish there trying to breed........and we recreational sea anglers banging on about the commercial guys messing up fish stocks.
Surely a few each and then move on would be better for the fish, they may go back but do they survive ? It sure as hell would interupt my breeding to be dragged off, even if I was allowed to continue afterwards.!
I love catching bream but it can get a bit silly, I stopped fishing with one club as 40plus bream were weighed in by one guy alone in a boat match.

Snap! Have found this deadly for the better bream out in Cardigan Bay on more than one occasion!

Several times I've been out there and found a bait that has outfished everything else by 100% or more. Frozen king rag was one - a most unlikely offering, left on the boat by a previous charter group, but I tried it on one occasion and it was generating ferocious takes as soon as it hit the seabed. I know the bream eat that red seaweed, which mangled old ragworm vaguely resembles, but whether that's why or not is anyone's guess!

It's almost as if they go on a feeding frenzy on one bait, and at the same time go quite sniffy about others!

Anyone going on a boat heading for bream-likely grounds is therefore well-advised to take a good selection of baits with them. Estuary cockles are worth having with you on top of the ones mentioned above - sometimes they love 'em, other times you won't get a touch - keep varying baits till you start getting lots of takes :)

Cheers - John

I always hear about their being crowds of boats out of Poole hammering fish. Its either bream or bass in the summer on live eel or hounds they love to move in swarms and nail them. Got to say after my 10th fish I would have given them a break, especially if there were 25 other boats doing the same. Whether they are returned or not its a bit much in my opinion. Were these chartered boats or private? If they were chartered they really should have known better, still its their own feet they're shooting I suppose.

Oh dear another controversy started

All but about a dozen that were males only, were returned.

Of the other 25 boats, and this is the first time I have ever fished there, only as far as I could see, 3 were charters, the rest were private boats.

Every one used T Bars to unhook fish, not that we were asked to do so. None were weighed as it was a numbers comp. If we had slaughtered 144 fish fair enough, I am sorry but I disagree with the remarks about commercials fundamentally.

More than 500 times of that amount would have been killed in single trawl, had some one been minded to do so.

This is what being an RSA is about surely.

But what the hell, I had an an enjoyable day, I caught 9 fish, all returned.

There were 7 rods there and it was a intra-club competition.

If people think I have committed some heinous offence, I am not sorry, tough. I had a damn good day's fishing.

I sentence you young Henry to 2 trips on Island Hopper for some therapy on the principles of ''Fillet & Release''
You are a very naughty boy for catching so many fish,''Shame on you''...You really should of learnt that it is now called ''Blank & Return''..After the Orford report and now this you really are making yourself ever so unpopular catching fish :uhuh: .......''Shame on you''

Looking forward to it Ron, can you PM me some dates? As for therapy, I totally agree, I am now suffering from post traumatic fish disorder, or a bad case of addiction.

Hi Edgey

How did you get on with Pat?
I've heard that he is actually a very good charter skipper, but by 'eck he doesn't half drivel on the VHF.
Please would someone tell him it isn't his personal radio frequency!

Very well, but then he was kept very busy writing down the scores as fish poured over the side in their thousands. LOL.

Lord knows how old he is, but his experience shows he obviously knows where to put people. I will not post publicly his trick, but it was excellent.

I have just about heard it all now! one minute people are getting told off for taking too many home, then someone actually finds the idea of catching too many wrong. so you pay your money and catch a shed load, return them but stop as you have caught enough? what you meant to do then?, Go Home?
I personally think fishing for pleasure (not for the pot) is a silly idea, but i have to say i really cannot get my head around that statement

I would have kept one or two, but as the Boss has filled the freezer from sainsburys and I have a fish in there as well, we only have a small freezer, I did not want to waste fish that I would not freeze immediately or eat straight away.

Also as I understand it, if you have caught enough for your needs one is asked in the interests of conservation either to stop fishing or fish catch and release. As the comp was a points comp, with only those fish that people wanted to eat being kept, then I fail to understand the point of view that now we should go out for the day, catch one fish and then return home.

I am going to fish for Cod from Orford on the 24th April. Last time I caught 9 and returned 6, should I this time pack up as soon as I catch the first, which last time was at 4pm and then wait 15 1/2 hours to be collected? Or should I continue to fish, return those that I don't want, and if I catch something I like fillet and release!!!!!!

Hey Keith, Might make you feel easier if I share one thing that I have personally experienced. Black Bream return very well indeed. You can see this for yourself if you fish Brighton Marina as when the kids are on holiday for the long break, it coincides with lots of smaller bream. They are caught in huge numbers, and normally thown back from some height. After about a week, you start to catch them with signs of hook damage, and sometimes with lines where they have been cut off. And fom the boats they get a gentle release and are more often than not nicely lip hooked.

Well done Henry, and good on you for releasing so many. Sounds like everything fell right, and you guys reaped the rewads. But for the one guy to have so many! Should be in the England Boat squad!!

I know old Buddy, I was apologise if it looked as if it were to you, I am irritated by the criticism from the other two posters however.

We have followed the rules slavishly and as far as I am concerned wholeheartedly and happily as I agree with them; we do this for a hobby and now I have been slammed for being greedy.

How many shore comps return every fish successfully, bar those that are kept for the pot, a lot less than we did I would suspect.

The fact that the Bream are about in such numbers is GOOD NEWS, not bad news and as long as the policies set out above are followed there is no reason why they will not get better.

People who catch 63 mackerel on Chesil would be described as irresponsible macky-bashers and it would be argued that no one should need to catch that many.
The original post did not mention a match and your emotive comment about "have committed some heinous offence" does not help a discussion; no one said it was a heinous offence; I would get bored after a dozen even with bream. If fishing was easy I would not bother with it, if mackererel or bream or any other fish are shoaled up like that the challenge of catching is no longer there. If you are over a shoal of bream and move the bait slighly you are likely to get a take every time, a fish a chuck. It becomes a mechanical chore rather than an exciting pursuit of fish.
Perhaps matches would be better if a limit of, say, six fish of each species were allowed in the scoring process as is common in beach matches.
I have my opinion, you have yours, the forum is for an interchange of ideas and opinions, not for wars to break out. Rob has put forward a comment which goes some way towards reassuring me on the catch and release of bream, but as I said, the bream are there to breed.... that is why they shoal up, and disturbance cannot help the situation.
