Hi Fox

If you don't mind where abouts are you fishing from?

Early season skate can be taken on a variety of baits. Fresh herring, frozen mackerel presented either as whole/half fillets or cutlets. A combination of both frozen mackerel and small, whole squid. Sandeel is good too, but not sure on a boat.

If downtide fishing use a running ledger with hook lenthg up to 6ft. For uptide casting, The hook trace needs to be between 4 and 6ft of 40lb line and for safety mount the bait on one of the wires on the grip lead.

Hooks should be 2/0 to 4/0. Sharp points on the hook is the key to the successful hooking of rays.
