When I was last in Spain, some years ago mind.
I saw the mullet feeding on crusts of bread.
The locals, savvy lot, would be float fishing with bread, no weight otherthan the float and would drift it around the boats.
I watched as they caught several, obviously they were destined for the Barby!!!!
So, why not try this method is the UK?
Answers on a postcard please!!!

Bread punch, on a Waggler, size 6-8 hooks, had them on the surface or a very long drop. Personally would not want to put a Harbour Mullet on the Barby, sooner the open water Mullet not saying i don't mind catching them from the Harbour, i find that some ground bait, a little and often, a mix of bread and bran crumb a little water helps get them on the feed once one starts, the rest will follow.

I don't often float fish for mullet but I catch them from time to time when fishing for other species.

I haven't caught one on bread since the 1970s

Most have come to mackerel or gar strip, a few to head hooked ragworm.

I watched a lady at Weymouth Harbour catching them on bits of chip.

I feed mashed bread with or without sweetcorn in the rivers with a 10p sized piece flake pinched on a size 8 or 2 bits of corn and return the fish. On the coast I feed mashed bread and whatever else comes to hand, minced fish, including tinned sardines in oil, squid, mussels and fish bread or fish slivers. Some fish are kept for the table

I will be mullet fishing on Saturday so will post a picture of my set up. I use a wine cork for a float as a slight touch and it makes a ripple across the water so you can't miss bites and don't seem to put fish off as it hits the water. In fact it seems to attract mullet for some reason.
They probably think its a bit of turd

I float fish for mullet a few different ways, some times I use a simple coarse fishing waggler set up with a size 8-12 hook and bread bait, sometimes I'll use a small bubble float if I'm fishing at distance with either a floating bread crust of slow sinking bread bait.

My favourite method is one I made up, when using my ultra light lrf gear I'll use 1 or 2 of these

Tronix pop up beads with a small split shot either side to hold them in place, they make no splash and don't spook the mullet, and the bait will move with the current very naturally, this is my most successful method.

My hookbait is always bread, ground bait will either be mushed up bread or bread and tinned fish fillets in oil, the oil help makes a good scent trail for the fish to follow

Hi Colin. Basic Fresh White Bread cut the crust off and using a rolling pin flatten the bread, do enough for a session and store in a plastic zip bag to stop it drying out then with a bread punch from the fresh water section in your tackle shop or on line they do different diameters 5-6 mm diameter would be fine, place your flatten bread on a small chopping board or a wooden bait board and push the punch into the bread. The punch bread will stay in the end of the punch, just push your hook into the bread and you will have a perfect bread punch bait every time. Just remember to keep it moist out of the sun and protected in a zip bag or plastic box with a sealable lid.

Hi Colin. You are welcome it's an excellent cheap bait you will get a lot out of one slice of bread and you can freeze it for the next session as well. Once it hits the water it will swell up and fluff up, but it will be delicate so be careful, the Mullet will try and knock it off the hook, you can always put a couple of bread punch on the hook if you want to bulk up the bait, best of luck with the fishing.

Often day trippers like myself can't do the early/late sessions so have to make do with peak time so to speak. I Have often fed off the birds when after Carp on stillwaters using quite a few loaves but could imagine the carnage if I did this at a busy coastal mark. Handy If you got someone with you who can walk elsewhere feeding them like you say, my missus is well good at that now :D

Twitching the bait will ping punched bread off easy but if you squeeze a small bit of bread on the eye of the hook leaving the hook point just covered in the fluffy bit you'll be surprised how much it stays on. Not as good a bait as punch maybe but much more robust.
