Hello, was fishing today in Falmouth harbour (had a bass so im happy ☺), but my friend was using 15lb fluorocarbon mainline on his 6000 hyperloop (his beach/bass set up) and said he preferred it to mono for bottom fishing. I prefer mono, but what are your opinions on this, fluoro or mono for general shore fishing with 3-5oz leads?

I don't believe fluoro makes the slightest difference in catching fish (only anglers). Yesterday my daughter caught four snapper around 3 kg on 20lb mamoi mono to my one snapper using 15lb fluoro, this isn't a one off and I've tested many different brands of fluoro against mono and never seen any advantage to it.

i think your right jon,, it dosent make any difference,, tho it does make a stiffer snood..and less prone to tangle..

From what Im lead to believe is the light absorbing quality of fluoro making it harder for us humans to see is in freshwater (I don't fish freshwater).I haven't been able to get an answere from any fish, they just stare at me all weird like when I ask them!!!

There are also supple fluoro lines much like normal mono on the market, one thing they all seem to have is a lowered breaking knot strength but higher claimed abrasion resistance.

I did read that fluoro tested in its early days by longline fishermen had huge improvements in catch rates, that particular article had no proof to back anything up and could of been written by anyone (maybe the manufacturers of the fluoro).

Our local leading game fishing boat uses plain mono as does our largest longliner. Those silly little spools with just 25 yards are a complete rip off in my opinion and I challenge anyone or manufacture to come out with me and prove it outfishes mono.

Hi,

imo filling up a reel with (expensive)fluorocarbon mainline is nonsense : waiste of money, and i think the stiffer line does penalize casting distances ... i do use fluoro for rig making though : don't know if it's true but it just gives me that extra confidence when targetting shy fish's (giltheads, breams) in clear water ... i wouldn't bother using it in our murky north sea!

Fluorocarbon makes no difference here in South Wales as most of the time the colour of the water is like brown Windsor soup

I have been fishing matches up here over the last couple of years and hence started experimenting with fluorocarbon for my hook snoods, personally I have found 20lb Amnesia in clear to be just as good if not better than the fifteen pound fluorocarbon. My catch rate is the same and the added bonus is the 20lb Amnesia seems to be less prone to tangling round the rig body when using 24 inch plus hook snoods.

Ive found fluoro seems to have much better wet knot strength and less stretch , never seems to absorb water . casting like for like against copoly or mono ,no contest it is so much heavier you can see the loops fly off totally different to mono , as for clarity , it picks up mobile debris as easy as any thing else, can be verrry knot sensitive, some of todays good flouros are quite supple yet still damn heavy, cost compared against others , it is damn expensive, the only property I like is it sinks really quick , a trait more freshwater orientated I think.

Sorry everybody, just picked up on this one.....
As a Sea, Freshwater and Game angler I use a plethora of lines from Beach Casting through Bass/Pike/Salmon Spinning to Light Trotting and all rates of Wet and Dry Fly fishing..... Yes I am still married, just.:veryconfused:
Mono V Braid V Fluoro = they all have their place but Fluoro main-line?
Mad, mad, mad.... It will trash your gear in no time; check your rod eyes after playing a good fish...:(
Just saying.....

Never used it anywhere in the world I have fished, fresh and saltwater. Caught more than my share on bait, fly and plugs etc.
And despite what the adverts tell you neither do many of the greatest saltwater guides in the world, or ( and I shouldn't say this but I will ) those who put their name on the magazine advert and take the money and run as fast as they can to the next advert.
Just my opinion if any of their lawyers are reading. True though haha.

Some wild statements there, sounds like you have had some sort of experiance of fluoro trashing your rod eyes from using it.

Even though I don't believe it has any catch rate improvements over regular mono I have still used plenty and infact have on a couple of reels as main line only. Berkeley vanish fluoro is as cheap as almost any other mono, which I have in 6-8-and 12 lb on a few light reels used on light game from snapper to dolphin fish.

I've use this on the few outfits Not because it's fluoro but just on price.

It has not damaged any of my gear after several years use.

Though I have tried heavy on my game outfits I now mostly use mamoi diamond mono. Some of my fishing buddies use fluoro as 30m wind on leaders attached to fluoro traces and have no damage to their gear.

Judging if one can or will catch more fish can be extremely difficult, as you can have two people dropping baits side by side on exactly he same gear where only one might catch all the fish. If anyone believes it works best for them and had better success using it then don't be put off by us doubters.

Quite agree Jon, in fact I'd go to the extent in saying that fluoro is supposed to be ni on invisible but I've noticed that if using it in shallow clear water and with sunlight it actually stands out a lot more than mono,

Definitely not for me, would much rather use a quality mono mainline and also for snoods ;)

Haven't used it on my gear Jon but the technicians at my place of work find that it can be used, short length between two bits of wood, to saw through polycarbonate rods without marking; it melts the poly so the cut end is crystal clear. I asked them to try other mats and yes it will cut through gold, copper and carbon fibre!
My initial comment was based on the damage I've done to myself hand lining leaders with fish on into a boat, braid and fluoro both cut you to bits, fluoro is an especially 'hard/dense' material.
Just saying, from my own personal experience..

Despite being so hard i find fluro gets damaged and weakened quickly on sandy storm beaches and wont use it for mainline Fluro to shockleader is also a dodgy kmot
