Heard some reports that there is some good fishing to be had at Furnace just now....Is this true re pollack and coalies...Dont what to travel the distance for say only mackeral....Any good spots up there...Any advice would be great..Cheers

like the galaday in furnace every day, would say ud need tae be there aw day for a good spot

Dunno about right now mate, I was up there a few months back for the first time and it was busy but fishing was pretty poor. There were a few small red cod about and some doggies but that was about it. Plus it's really snaggy, plan on loosing tackle at least every second cast so take really cheap hommade rigs and weights with rotten bottoms if you want to fish on the bottom. Float fished rag can produce up there and you are less likley to get snagged using a float.

deep spinning off the rocks under the radio mast produces a fish every few casts most days, although it can be slow at times. bait fishing off the pier or the back harbour wall will produce but its a tackle graveyard up there so rotten bottom rigs are a must.

floating is best done off the harbour wall at a depth of about 25-30ft. there are some decent sized fish around furnace (5-6lb) but youre more likely to catch within a 1lb-3lb margin.

Depends on your interpretation of close. Depending on which part of quarry you want to fish you can get as close as 20-30m

park in the carpark just before the quarry entrance. its about 80m to the rocks and about the same to the pier and harbour.

its a working quarry so remember to look where youre going and not get in the way.

Never seen a coalie (over a pound) m8 i fish up that way alot ! Plenty of pollack tho!! wrasse not bad size too !
