May sound like a daft question, but is there any way of distinguishing a Gill Net from a string of pots from a distance?

We fished Towan on the Roseland on Saturday evening. Tried everything, mackerel, lug, squid, sandeel and plugging. Not a sniff. Same story for another chap fishing down there. About 300m off shore was a long string (must have been 500m) of white buoys spaced about 100m apart, the end ones with flags on top. Is there any way of saying if that was a gill net or was it just a string of pots?

Ive come across a line of gill nets when boat fishing in an area known as the bizzies, which is not far off towan beach. It was last summer and we managed to get our rigs tangled in it. DAMN!!! Cant remember what the bouys looked though but they were approx 100m apart aswell.
