Glowing "baits"?

Has anyone tried the glow-in-the-dark type "baits" such as lures or other attractors?

The only experience of having used anything that glowed in the dark was when I realised one of my beads was glowing when I reeled it in at night (must have been part of a set I got without realising it). I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the nice Dover Sole sitting on the end of the hook just below it, but anyone have any experience with glow-in-the-dark products catch-wise? e.g., notice any difference in catch rates?

Cheers

yes, the small beads or tiny shrimps from hokai lures glow and can be recharged with light from your headlamp. They do attract fish.... but unfortunately for me, it is mostly pout they attract.

i use glow beads and luminous micro muppers on most my night rigs, i have a better hook rate than my fishing buddy who doesnt use them

Sounds encouraging then - any idea where to get cheap glow beads from? (ie probably not the tackle shops as I can't believe the prices they charge sometimes for things you can find elsewhere for next to nothing - e.g., I bought a few thousand beads in a childrens bead kit in Asda a while ago for I think about £2-3.99. I saw beads selling for a few quid for a couple of dozen in a tackle shop recently. Makes you think doesn't it..).

Try using luminous muppets {plastic squid} with a mini green starlight
stuffed up its harris
They don't half glow
All you do is attatch the starlight to your snood line
Then slide the muppet over it

Has anyone used a chem light on a cod pennel rig at night?

Just wondering if it would give it that bit "extra".

a glow bead held close to the back of your bait can greatly increase you bite rate when after flatfish and whiting. in fact most matches on the northeast coast ban them especialy when fishing in rivers for flounders because they can make a real difference.

small codling in our rivers will also find a bait with a glow bead on easier.

use an 8mm max glow bead or up to 2, 5mm oval beads.

i find that a starlight can be too bright and put fish off. fish can actually see in the dark or dirty water very well and a gently glowing bead will help them see it from a greater distance but a startlight i feel glows far too bright and to eye that see well in dark can be blinding. [personal thought]

a bead will glow for a short while but i have found that using half a "fishtech, glowgrub" works very well and glows for far longer than a bead.

the beads from david gould work very well and i personally prefer the white glow beads over green.

i have had lots of customers actually supply his beads to be put on the rigs i supplied them.

lots of guys locally have actually greatly increased there catch rate of whiting using a glow bead above the hook.

one tip though is keep the bead as close to the bead as poss using it as a bait stop or you will get false bites as the odd fish will attack the bead missing the hook.

I might give it a try on one snood of a two hook rig as an experiment next time I'm out.

If you want to re-charge lumi beads quickly, buy a cheap flashgun from a boot sale and use that, the high-intensive light charges them immediately

Saturday eve, my first whiting was caught with a rig plus a few glowing beads. Will use them again. Need to find beads that glow longer.

There is a chemist out there I believe......just what is luminosity, both chemical and light reactive? Cheers, Tony.

veals do an item called ... fishtech glow grubs .... these actually glow for hours instead on the minutes a bead glows. use them whole or i cut them in half.

the good thing about these is they can be threaded over the hook of a ready made rig so added when needed. they also grip the line so theres no need for a stop knot. give them a rinse after a session and once dried can be used again.

Dab catcher, I think that the flash gun idea might only give a short glow in my beads as on the tests I did in a fully blacked room showed that using a UV torch for 10 to 15 seconds just before you cast allowed me to see the beads 4 hours later ..( I wear glasses ) .

Fishes eyes are far more sensitive to the luminescence than the human eye .. I understand it may be due natural development ... hunting food in the sea covered with minute phosphorescence particles.

I notice the tackle shops are now on the band wagon selling 20 x 8mm or so beads for £1.89 ..that is expensive . The beads are also available in the site shop..

i only use my headlamp to charge my beads. i prefer to use them in daylight where they are charged naturally. even in clear water they still attract fish.

charging with a uv torch sounds a good idea but i dont think that many of us out there are going to have one. i have found that my smal 7 led headtorch charges them better than a normal lamp. they seem brighter but for how long i have never checked.

i know that fish can see luminescence far better than we can so even a slight glow will be sufficient. this is why i beleive using a starlight is too bright.

You can get them from the gadget sites, £Bay, pound shops.

I've got a key ring one that is meant for checking bank notes. I got it from a pound shop.

went and got a couple of the uv torches from the poundshop on the way home. bonus they were reduced to 25p each so got a few.

they really do make it easier to charge the beads but whether they last any longer i dont know yet.

we used glow beads on our rigs and far outcaught those fishing around us. we had loads of large whiting and dabs while others only managed one or two fish each.

i dont put this solely down to the beads because our rigs and baits used with have been a major factor also. but had the other put the beads on there rigsi beleive they would have caught more.

i actually had my best dab of 1lb 4oz on the beaded rigs.

 I'd like to think that proves that they do catch more then!

In your humble opinion, DC, would there be a situation where the glowing bead would have a negative effect on bites?

Cheers
