WSF,
Seen many posts regarding handling fish with your bare hands can damage certain species/maybe all of sea fish...?
Does this also apply to course fishing and if not why...?

There are published papers about fatalities amongst mackerel after being handled. This is now generally accepted.

I am not aware of similar research covering other species, but Mike Pawson at CEFAS has the following to say about mackerel:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So it seems that mackerel, unlike any other species, are likely to die if their incredibly thin and specialised skin is touched by human hands (you can often see the marks of your hand on the skin of a mackerel when it is returned to water).

Catching only what you need is the best advice, but if you do hook a mackerel that you don't need then it's best to shake it off the hook without touching it (use of barbless hooks will help).

Regarding coarse fish, it has always been recognised that dislodging the film of protective slime or the scales which it covers will always expose an individual to skin pathogens and parasites.

Ada
Thanks Ada for this information which is much appreciated.

The only course fish I'm aware of been damaged by touching it with dry hands is trout. You can burn their skin with your hands if they're not wet.

All slimey fishes will be damaged by contact with any dry surface, especially hands or towels. When I was managing fish farms, using dry hands was a disciplinary offence unless the fish was to be killed immediately.
