My name's Dave and I am a noob here! I I used to go fishing a long time ago (20+years!!!) on the Medway (Gillingham, Rainham etc.) and occasional boat trips out of Ramsgate etc.

Now I live on the South Coast near Eastbourne / Pevensey and being so close to the sea, I have decided that rather than spending weekends in front of the telly, I'd have a go at fishing again, this time beach which I have never done before.

I have recently bought a new beach rod and reel and some basic kit and pretty much ready to go. The only bait I could get this weekend at short notice is some frozen lug. Now here is my first dumb question....... Do I thaw these out before going (I live about twenty minutes from the beach), thaw them out there, use them, frozen or what? Frozen bait is a new thing for me as are many other changes in the kit, so bear with me!!

I am going to try and get out over the weekend so any advice appreciated!

hi dave,
take your frozen black lug out the freezer just before you
leave,by the time you get there and tackle up it will be ready to use,
if you find its still a bit hard you can just dip it in the salt water and
it will soften enough to put on the hook...
if you ever need any help or advice for fishing your area, the anglers den
in pevensey is a great tackle shop and very helpfull people.

welcome to the art of beach fishing, and hope the info helps..

all the best puddle man....:bounce:

Hello Dave and welcome,
I am no expert but I usually take frozen bait out freezer about hour before
trip, you can always dip frozen bait in sea water before fishing to soften it up.only take what you can reasonably use as not good practice to try and re-freeze un-used bait, especially worms.
As I said not expert but works for me.
Good luck to you mate.

hi ntman,
don't ever waste your black lug mate!,if you have some defrosted blacks....re-freeze them they will be ideal for the dabs in the
winter, old smelly stuff is much better than fresh for dabs..
just remember to mark them up in your freezer as dab bait....:victory:

Wow! Quick response, thanks guys! I got all my stuff and some sage advice already from the lads at Anglers Den, recommended shop!

As I say, looking forward to tomorrow, but this is all new to me trying to remember what I did 20 year back, plus all the new stuff and a new type of sea fishing, so should be an experience if nothing else!!:eek:hmy::blink::D

High tide tomorrow is 0915hrs, so is it best to fish it in and out, just at the peak or on the out?

hi mate,
pevensey bay is a very good venue to fish on the drop,
i have always found that 3hrs up and on high tide fishes well at
distance, but the 2hrs of the drop fish well close in...

if you can remember that when you freeze or re-freeze black lug
always put it in a sealed plastic bag and squeeze the air out of it,
this will help stop it drying out in the freezer...

Hey Dave welcome to the forum! Good luck for tomo! Everyone here is full of experience, most questions answered within the hour! Have only fished Eastbourne a couple of times, despite living so close in Seaford. Let us know how you get on tomo I might have to come and have another crack that way soon!

Instead of putting the hook straight throughh a frozen worm try going in and out of the worm and a couple of turns of bait elastic to stop it slipping and masking the hook point hope this helps .FRANK

Welcome to the Forum . Frozen blacks are great but worth also keeping some boxes of frozen squid in the freezer as added backup armoury too ,specially as the Cod are hopefully just about to arrive . You can tip off your lug with a little sliver of squid as this can be quite effective.Or use a whole squid for Cod and Bass stuffed with bits of lug and elasticed up. ( Squid Kebabs ) Lot of fishmongers will do a few boxes for a fiver.:victory:
