Hi
In my neck of the woods (Gosport) which is not too far from you, Gurnards usually start getting caught regularly in September. Fish baits like Mackerel strip on size 1 hooks on a two hook rig do the trick. I have caught quite a few while Whiting fishing using 1/0 or 2/0 hooks with ragworm and Mackerel cocktails.
Hope you get one

I have been catching gurnard over here (Normandie France)for the past two months. Try a moving bait just tripping the bottom, or baited Feather again just tripping the bottom.
