i was fishing the menai and caught a few of these .
i thought it was a poor cod but the white markings threw me a bit
does anyone know for definate cheers in advance jags

cant be certen but it looks like a small red cod from the kelp dont think its a poor cod but could be wrong

i believe it is a codling they take on an appearance of the ground they are over but it looks red in colour so must have been alot of weed/kelp around so yeah a small codling mucca tight`uns

its a small codling, caught a few from the straits last weekend.

wouldn't know if it's a cod - can't remember the last time I saw one!

Similarly, a few friends found this fish under a rock on the shore of the Menai straits too today at low tide. Have tried all night to figure out what it is and have had no luck! Any thoughts?

It's a shanny. The commonest rock pool fish. They seem to survive in damp areas if stranded by the tide and will wriggle across the ground to escape. As pointed out before they bite!
