I guess a few of you have seen the write up on the latest 60hp engine from Honda.

Looking at the fuel consumption figures in the review of the new Honda BF60 they are fantastic.

The figures given are at 3500 rpm it uses 6.1 ltrs per hour a 21.5 knots. I've just rounded up the figures to an approximate 0.25 litres used per mile.

Unfortunately the review doesn't say what the boat was or the conditions though? Still, assuming it was on a 16ft planing hull boat, Is that figure believable?

At WOT of 5800 rpm = 31.4 knots, the reviewer says it uses 19.8 ltrs per hour, again rounded up approximately, it comes out at 0.6 ltrs used per mile.

Assuming my sums are correct, albeit near as approximations.... I just find those figures hard to accept.

As you say Dave if those figures were obtained on a 16ft boat & they are correct they are exceptional. Without knowing the hull used though it is hard to draw a conclusion. More believable if the motor was on a rib though.

at 7200 for the engine its at least 2k dearer than the rivals and 2 grand will buy a lot of fuel

it does have amazing figures but me thinks it will even on offers be too expensive

It does look a very impressive motor but full list is more than full list for many 90's and in real terms may well get you a 115.

I've seen this motor reviewed in a few mags and the pics I've seen, it's been on the back of a RIB or a smallish aluminium boat, so probably running at very low revs to give the speed quoted.

I like it's ETEC styling too!

That sounds more like it (RIB or small aluminium boat). I would be very surprised if it could return .25 litre per mile on the back of something like a Warrior.

That perhaps explains the figures. The boat in the BFM review is not pictured. You only see the transom. It does look like a small aluminium boat. The revs that the figures came from where in the original post as 3700 and 5800 WOT.

It also said they had got the weight below a 2 stroke by making the cradle out of aluminium. Not sure what the cradle is? (transom mount?) As they didn't give a weight - a comparison couldn't be made. I had a look on the Honda website. It is 110kg dry, so arguably, only just lighter than a 60 Etec. Is there any other 60hp modern 2 strokes?

What's a review worth then if it doesn't tell the full story?

Its not lighter than my 60 Etec as mine is 107 kg :bleh: :bleh: :bleh:

AS for honda and going prestige well the dealer who i deal with was visited by honda a couple of years ago and they didnt like the look of his premises as he didnt have a showroom to display a range of there engines

total snobery in my eyes as his place is clean and tidy but not flashy

well it may become a thing of snobery but at 2k above the list for the comparable outboard dont think it will do there sales much good

I can't really see much point in a 'prestige' outboard - it's stuck out on the back of your boat - you want it to be compact, light, quiet, reliable, economical in both running and servicing and perform well - as most are these days - 'prestige' might work for a car or even the boat itself, but for the outboard? - I can't see it adding any value.

These figure are fantasy, I have just aquired a Brand new BF50,efi, blast tech and i cannot achieve anywhere near these figure in fact I run at 4,500 rpm for 20 miles and used 15 lts, working that out a mile per 1.3lts

Is that the same motor bazil? Check your figures... I guess you will get a bit better consumption once it is run in. Not 3/4 of a litre better though.

I have a September 2008 Mariner 60hp efi 4 stroke fitted to an Endeavour 500 and recently did a trip of 35 miles at around 15knots and used 25 litres of fuel which equates to about 0.71 ltrs per mile. The engine only weighs 112kg so it is lighter than the Honda

you got your sums back to front. 15 ltrs for 20 miles is 0.75 ltrs per mile - about the same as my engine!

I'm not sure what the point is you are making by giving those figures for your engine WL? The cruising speed of 21.5 knots for the Honda at 3500rpm claimed a fuel consumption figure of approximately only 1/4 litre per mile used.
Just for comparison - the Honda is approx 3 times more fuel efficient than the Mariner!
