Ok, anyone got any good recommended hook outlets?

Do the brands like sakuma, mustad etc really last longer than something like this? Bulk Pack 100 x 3/0 Aberdeen Sea Hooks: Amazon.co.uk: Sports & Outdoors

yep, they sure do

if you skimp on hooks, then lose the fish of a lifetime, what are you going to blame?

cheapy hooks are that for a reason!, normally shyte, bend or snap easily, go blunt as soon as it sees the sand etc etc

best option is buy the best you can afford, even if you are buying less quantity, but better quality

just my call, but end gear and line are the things ive never scrimped on!!

Hi ,

... as above : never save on hooks and line : they are the first and most import conection with a fish ... always buy the best you can find !
If you want to save money do it on rods , reels , etc ... : even budget tackle will handle a nice fish !

why pay good money to have the best bait you can get to put it on cheap, blunt hooks.

the cheap black aberdeens are of poor steel, misshapen, blunt. you really do get what you pay for with them.

a top quality hook will only cost you about 20p and stay sharp for the whole session, [unless you snag it on something]

you can pay thousands of pounds to have the best rods, reels, lines etc etc but its the 20p hook that will catch you the fish.

If im not expecting anything special fish wise i dont mind using the cheapo aberdeens in the smaller sizes,a flounder, dab, dog or whiting isnt gonna bust you off is it!
Most times when you hook a big fish it is not expected, I'd rather be safe than lose one, glad I had good hooks on when I caught my big Cod

Snapping wouldn't be an issue with most of the cheap hooks I've come across over the years ..... they generally don't hold a good enough point to hook anything in the first place. I've seen them so crap that the points bend as you test them on your skin and others that snapped at the barb as you put bait on them!

Good aberdeens are that cheap as far as good quality hooks go anyway so I really don't see the point in what could be a seriously false economy ..... you can buy kamasan and mustad 3262 aberdeens in bulk which work out very reasonable for a hook that will not let you down.

Each to their own blakdog, not every cheap hook is rubbish,i use sakumas, varivas, mustad, kamasan and partridge hooks, but dont mind stooping to a cheapo aberdeen if im pleasure fishing and gonna lose a few hooks on small fish swallowing the hook,it makes things cheaper rather than lining someone elses pockets.

Two occurances spring to mind: an evening on Eastney beach in Hampshire (not known for Smoothhound) scratching around for Pout, baby Black Bream and possible school Bass, two hook flapper rigs, size 1 hooks. Result - an 11lb Smoothhound. 2) A summer evening on the end of South Shields Pier, again scratching for Coalfish and flatties, flapper rig, size 1 hooks. Result, a cod I guesstimate to have been about 7-8lb, lost it on the lift when my 15lb mainline snapped. In both cases the hook held fine.

A box of 100 Kamasan B940 Aberdeen hooks (used in the scenarios above) costs about £10. You never know what is going to pick up your bait and as the hook is the single most important thing linking you to the fish why skimp on quality for the sake of 20p?

With the really cheap crap you are referring to you will certainly be lining somebodies pockets ... the profit margins on the cheapos is actually often more than on the more reputable brands. the end price in no way indicates the percentage profit.

As i said before ... the likes of kamasan are 100% reliable and you know that you will always have a certain quality. they dont let you down and will remain sharp despite a lot of bites and use and usually that Makes them a much more cost effective option.

If you are loosing that many hooks because of deep hooking fish you wantvto return that cost has become an issue i would have thought it better to either make efforts to prevent deep hooking small fish or maybe just up the hook size to stop tiddlers getting the bait down. I would be looking at circle hooks rather than cheap stuff in the same patternbthat causes a problem. Mustad 3262s arecalso good in that they can be softened ... they can then be pulled straight to get out from a deep hookhold a lot of times and will then bend back into shape - have landed a lot of reasonable fish on them without any issues.

second biggest sea fish i have landed is with a 15 quid rod and 15 quid reel but saving grace was the end tackle ie hook etc was top of the range......NEVER SKIMP ON HOOKS or swivels for that matter, at end of day a fish aint bothered if its yer all singing all dancing rod or reel its only bothered about food........end tackle is what its all about in my humble experience cheers the noo and tight lines
