Still grieving over continuing loss of the Marina arms, time to give Hove Beach a try. Fished in front of the King Alfred, three hours around the 13.25 high. Incoming tide with healthy breakers, hardly any weed at first, followed by manageable amounts post-high.

Two rods out, one wishbone + bling, one 2-hook flapper. Various combos of frozen black, squid and mackerel. Lots of minor knocks, resulting in six, blank-avoiding but tiny channel whiting, nothing bigger than 26 cm! They all went back, apart from one which was transferred to my bass rig, duly chucked out into the receding breakers. Result, one definite take, suddenly disembarked in the surf just a few metres out. Damn.

Nice thing was, had one beach entirely to myself. Guy next beach had suffered mini-whiting attack, but beached a 3 1/2 lb flounder there last week.

So, nothing to get too excited about, but at least it was fishing – of sorts. Next stop Southwick…
