Just ordered some 2 new Power Pro packs for me and the Wife's reels.

Just how much do you really need to put on a reel? Most lure fishing wouldn't be more than 25m out for for us and only more for heavy Dexters, etc.

Is it OK to put 150m of mono on then say 75m of braid on top? Or does it dig in too much?

i used a full small spool for mine and backed it out with cheap 20lb mono. under fill the spool by a few mm with braid to help combat the dreaded windknots

gave my mate some braid the other day and he asked the same thing. we tossed the question around a bit and it came down to what type of fishing you're planning on doing.

for example, a few years back i really got on a deep spinning for Pollack trip. i needed to cast a long way and let it sink to about 80 feet. i reckon anything less than 150 yards of braid would've been cutting it a bit fine, especially as you occasionally lost a bit off the end due to snags or had to snip some out due to a wind knot.

for close range bassing though i'm tempted to go down to 100 yards of braid. i will rarely be casting more than 25 yards, and if i connect with a fish at that range and it runs straight out for 75+ yards (er, yeah) then i'll be onto the mono backing and that'll make no difference.

i dunno. other more experienced lure anglers may be able to offer better advice. just my thoughts on the matter.

Put the whole spool on - I take it you have the 150 yrds. It does depend on the work you are doing but the furthest casting lures will go 75m +. Also half way through the season you may be find that you are going on to your backing and will need more braid. I would use ten lb mono with 20/30lb pp. How much backing to put on depends on your reel. Time to do some maths.

My two peneth being...

1)Back the spool with insulating tape.... Depending on the size of the spool only really a small amount for small spinning reels.
2)Under fill the spool otherwise you'll be in wind knot city.
3)100 - 150m will be totally fine.
4)Use some kind of leader to prevent top-hook hook ups... 20lb fluro/20lb amnesia will do the trick depending on your preference.

Happy hunting.
