a 49lb Tope, 9lb 11 oz Bass, 6lb 12 oz Ballan Wrasse, 37lb Conger, 5lb 1 oz Grey Mullet, 3lb 3 oz Red Mullet or 1lb 5 oz Garfish all from the shore? Those were the winning category winners from last years Alderney fishing festival week which is coming around again from the 17th October. I have rented an apartment close to Braye beach for 9 days commencing Friday 16th and currently have 2 rooms available, a single room and a double. If anyone would like to fish this festival but has no accomodation please PM me and I will come back to you. The offer is for accomodation only and you would have to arrange your own flights and entry into the week long competition.

Its still there Baz, and it looked like it had a coat of paint when I was there last year. It looked a very nice place to stay, The place that I have booked overlooks Braye Beach as well.

What was formerly the Sea View Hotel, reopened a couple of years ago after a (well over budget) £20m refit, renamed as the Braye Beach Hotel... tis a very nice looking hotel, but then I guess it should be after having that much spent on it.

Looks like there are some good tides for it this year... very similar to the 2004 festival when 5 tope over 40lb were weighed in, topped off by one of 50lb 8oz caught by Steve Mullins... I had 4 over 38lb myself, including a 41lb during the festival and a 48lb 6oz one a few days before.

Was also quite a good year for the Bream as well, if I remember rightly.

Some more info about this years festival can be found here;

Last years result wasn't really that good either by Alderney standards... will hopefully be much better this year and only 6 weeks to go!

I think you'd have to point out that last year wasnt even a good year!!
Cant say ive fished the Festival, but ive been to Alderney at least half a dozen times and the fishing is something else.
Good luck to all that fish the festival and i hope the weather is ok.

The regular lads said that last year was the worst on record, and yet the quality and amount of fish caught was still an anglers dream. On the second day of the comp I caught 20 Ballan Wrasse ranging from 1lb to about 2lb 8 oz, not record breakers but still superb angling. No bream or sole qualifiers were landed last year, but loads of near misses. When you think that the qualifying weights for these 2 species are 3lb and 2lb 4oz respectively it make you realize how good the fishing can be.

Sounds very posh ,no chance of us anglers being allowed to get p***** in there like we used to in the Seaview

Normally theres lots of good bream caught. I reckon the best place for Sole is Fort Doyle (aka PooPipe Rocks) haha, my dad and i had a couple just shy of 2lb (1lb 13/1lb 11) and thats where the british record of 6lb 8oz was caught, apparently they get plenty over 3lb from those rocks. Have you been to the Alderney museum? They've got a 11lb Mullet and a near 5lb Sole stuffed on the wall!

Regarding the Seaview hotel, i loved that place but i think the new development is probably a touch upper crust. I remember eating my breakfast then digging a load of blow lug just 20 yards away on the beach.

You are right. I checked the prices out a couple of months ago. Mind you if I spent a couple of million quid on a refurb I would probably have to hike up my charges. A lovely place but a bit above us dirty old anglers I feel. Not been to the Museum,must have a look when im there. Doyle was pants last year, I only had one grey mullet and it was only about 2lb, mind you I had a small Couches Bream which was a new species for me so I was pleased with that. Also had a nice turd from the sewage pipe that put up a good fight LOL:yucky::yucky:

I now have a taker for one of the rooms, so there is now 1 room left. Anyone else interested? As I now have 2 of the 3 rooms let the price for the remaining room is less due to the rental cost amount I have already taken. PM me if you are interested.

Have made a start on the rigs so I am making progress... just so many to make up as I like to be prepared for any eventuality!

Got my boots sorted and just need to sort out a decent set of waterproofs, as my current ones are not so any more, in case the weather turns out the same as last year!

I know what you mean about the number of different styles of rigs. Make sure you pack your sunblock as it is going to be sunny (Please lord), well reasonable anyway. As long as it does not rain all the time I will be a happy bunny
