been looking for a new reel, i use an abu mag 6500 for beach work and the sl30 for all the tough work. im in the market for a new reel, i would have gone for another 6500 but i feel it doesnt hold enough line and that the gearing is on the slow side, i will be fishing clean ground with it. give me some ideas.

thanks in advance

am using 15-18lb line, mostly 15lb. just feel its the lack of bulk on the spool means you gotta wind hard to get it moving.

a 6500 holds 245 yards of 14lb line.

spool your 6500 with Berkeley Fireline 20# (rates at 40# in tests)
a 6500 holds 300 yards with room to spare..
trust me, i just spooled another reel with a friend.

if you like mono instead,, saltist 20h. you can use it for clean/mixed

Hmmm 20lb fireline wouldnt be my first choice to switch from mono, fused lines like fireline are far thicker than standard braided lines. Look at the thickness of 20lb fireline 0.30mm , thats almost as thick as most 15lb mono.
If you`re considering braid I`d go for powerpro. Far better to cast with on a 6500 size reel and look at the diameter, 50lb is the same thicknes as 12lb mono, 40lb is the same as 10lb mono. If you`re gonna stick with mono then the penn 525mag is a superb reel.

Braid on a beach reel? Never tried it, wont it just cut into itself on the retrieve and cause probs on the next cast? Im gonna have to empty one of my reels n give it a go now!

For clean beach the Saltist is overkill!
The 6500 is the ideal reel for clean beach, the best casting and can retrieve fine even at distance.
If you do need more umph the 525 is the best alround reel!
