Improved bait clip for OTG casting

Hi everybody,I have been tinkering in the workshop again...

Now, who casts OTG ?

I do sometimes and tbh I am a bit fed up with the lack of a decent otg bait clip... the Gemini Splash downs are OK, but a bit limited in the hook size they can accommodate, The Genie Alpha baitclips, well, I have never been able to get them to work myself.
As far as I know they are the only two that will ( or are supposed to ) retain the hook securely so it doesn't fall out prior to the cast.

I cannot be bothered to cart a length of plastic gutter piping around with me, nor a casting board, or anything else similar..

I could use an aerialised ground cast, or a Brighton cast, or a Hatteras cast, but what if I dont want to ?

Here is what I have been tinkering with, I suppose you could say that it is a cross between a Gemini Splashdown and a Breakaway Impact shield, maybe a bit of input from Breakaway would streamline it a bit, It will take any hook size you are likely to use from the beach, I have used 4/0 bigmouths, pennel rigged with 2/0 bigmouths, and so far for me has released on impact 100% of the time, and never come unclipped when laid out on the ground..... it actually helps if the hook snood is slightly over length.
I have been trialling it for a while, and now think that it works well enough to pass it on to other anglers..... maybe even Breakaway will take a good look at it and produce it commercially for those of us that dont have the time to make their own.

All you need are an Breakaway impact shield, with its tail clipped off, a bit of stainless wire , a Genie type lead weight clip, and a bead.

I wont bore you with how its made, its fairly self evident.

Here is the bait clip, showing it in the casting position without a hook, the hook goes between the two wires that push through the impact shield.

Here is the bait clip after it has released the hook on impact with the water.

Here is the bait clip with a 4/0 big mouth in position for casting, you can see that the hook is secureley clipped between the two stainless wire prongs, an the impact shield holds it in place, the bead keeps the wires apart just enough to keep the hook in place

The impact shield releases exactly the same way as it would when used conventionally, the wire is just the correct length to be retained by the impact shileld.

It takes a bit of trial and error when making the wire insert to get the length just right, the "spring"in the stainless wire keeps everything in place.

As I said,,maybe Breakaway will see this and try duplicate it for those of us that have not the time or inclination to make our own.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply. Doest the impact shield slide freely over the wire or with a bit of resistance like with the original tube?

Gert
Gert, it depends on how much spring you put into the wire, if you nip it up quite tightly, it takes a bit of resistance to unclip it,if you have less spring it just slides freely, I have found that it works both ways... because the hook snood is slightly over length, there is nothing to pull on the impact shield when casting, thus no premature release.

Hi, Mr Rover, thank you, I have that setup on some rigs, and use them when backcasting, yes, a good rig , but the hook can self release ,and sometimes bounce out of the clip quite easily if you allow any slackness in the snood at all, as sometimes can happen with otg casting.
With the impact shield and wire carrier , I have tried to make it so that the hook is totally enclosed in the clip and you can literally just drop the rig onto the ground without keeping everything under tension, indeed it works best with a bit of slackness in the snood. IE, if the snood was tensioned by the srt spring , it would actually hinder it working by pulling against the impact shield.

It depends on getting the wire cut to just the correct length, too long and it can grip the hook a bit, made correctly I would say 100% release rate:) the same as an impact shield used as originally designed, no probs, as I have already said, works better with the snood just a bit over length, if the snood is pulled up tight to the impact shield all that happens is that either the hook falls free, or the hook sometimes lodges in the shield anyway until released by hitting the water.

In a word Si Fi..no.. neither does the original impact shield.....

It works just the same as a conventional impact shield, only instead of the rubber tubing around the impact shield leg it has the bead sliding on the wire, the further down you push the bead, the tighter it grips, but always releases on hitting the water.... I think its something to do with the coned design of the impact shield base, air pressure doesnt release it,water pressure does.

Dave, doesn't the weight of the bait pull the shield up the wire? I don't think it will release until the shield hits the water and the bead tilts it to release the hook, so probably doesn't matter if it does
By the way, don't like the lead clip the way round it is, sure to snag any weed or other things

I have already said, the hook snood is best left slightly slack ( read previous posts ) and water pressure pushes the bait clip up the wire and releases it.. until somebody works out a way of watching the clip in mid flight the answer probably wont ever be known.
So far as the lead clip i s concerned, many a hundred beach anglers use them, and they cant all be wrong, there are a few different lead clips availabe, I just happened to use that particular type as I have a shedload of them...Breakaway ones for instance work equally as well, I have a few clips with the Breakaway ones fitted, its a personal choice as to what you use .

All I know is that it works.
