Hi everybody,I have been tinkering in the workshop again...
Now, who casts OTG ?
I do sometimes and tbh I am a bit fed up with the lack of a decent otg bait clip... the Gemini Splash downs are OK, but a bit limited in the hook size they can accommodate, The Genie Alpha baitclips, well, I have never been able to get them to work myself.
As far as I know they are the only two that will ( or are supposed to ) retain the hook securely so it doesn't fall out prior to the cast.
I cannot be bothered to cart a length of plastic gutter piping around with me, nor a casting board, or anything else similar..
I could use an aerialised ground cast, or a Brighton cast, or a Hatteras cast, but what if I dont want to ?
Here is what I have been tinkering with, I suppose you could say that it is a cross between a Gemini Splashdown and a Breakaway Impact shield, maybe a bit of input from Breakaway would streamline it a bit, It will take any hook size you are likely to use from the beach, I have used 4/0 bigmouths, pennel rigged with 2/0 bigmouths, and so far for me has released on impact 100% of the time, and never come unclipped when laid out on the ground..... it actually helps if the hook snood is slightly over length.
I have been trialling it for a while, and now think that it works well enough to pass it on to other anglers..... maybe even Breakaway will take a good look at it and produce it commercially for those of us that dont have the time to make their own.
All you need are an Breakaway impact shield, with its tail clipped off, a bit of stainless wire , a Genie type lead weight clip, and a bead.
I wont bore you with how its made, its fairly self evident.
Here is the bait clip, showing it in the casting position without a hook, the hook goes between the two wires that push through the impact shield.
Here is the bait clip after it has released the hook on impact with the water.
Here is the bait clip with a 4/0 big mouth in position for casting, you can see that the hook is secureley clipped between the two stainless wire prongs, an the impact shield holds it in place, the bead keeps the wires apart just enough to keep the hook in place
The impact shield releases exactly the same way as it would when used conventionally, the wire is just the correct length to be retained by the impact shileld.
It takes a bit of trial and error when making the wire insert to get the length just right, the "spring"in the stainless wire keeps everything in place.
As I said,,maybe Breakaway will see this and try duplicate it for those of us that have not the time or inclination to make our own.
