My log (kept in a spreadsheet) contains :

Date
Location
Fishing time (from, to)
Tide time / state
Weather (including wind direction/speed)
Methods
Baits
Catch

I find it is sometimes hard to fill in the log after a bad trip, but by doing so you at least know where not to go in future when conditions are the same. A log truly comes into its own in the second year when you can refer back to last year for similar timing/tides/weather.

Would be happy to email you the basic template I am using - drop me a PM

YES keeping a log does help, The more information you log the better. I have been keeping one since 2002 using microsoft access, patterns do start to show up but do not forget that Weather and Tides are never the same.
