Hi all,
What type of landing nets do you all use?
Had a look on line, it sems that Fladen do one with a short hand grip. I've also seen ones with wooden handles but, look slightly small. Also gaff's? Do you use these ? I don't like to but, they may be handy. I like to T bar conger at the side of the boat, also it's another bit of kit.
Any thoughts.....
...... You can tell I,m getting the info to stock a yak (When I get it)Bob

most blokes in our area don't use a net. i tend to grab fish, while some use the those lip grippers which seem quite good. initially i did use a net with a folding handle, but 3 years on i feel it's not really needed, and i've got enough to carry as it is!! i'd have a look at those grippers; i think rapala do them. and just remember, when you've got a yak, there's no looking back:thumbs:

I know the ones you mean theres an article on these by Henry Gilby in the last few days. Berkly and boga or something like that, the difference is about 50-60 quid for the boga one but, it seems this is the top one.
Just handling the fish in may be a problem with a Bass- spiky-
Unless its a thumb in the mouth and lift.
Thanks for the reply.

I always use a net on my little rib, its only a cheapo from a local tackle shop, but its strong. You never know when you might hook that big fish, it would be a shame to loose it because of no net.............

I use a net, and it works very well.
The important features of that particular one are that it has a fully sliding handle that helps stowage, and a large ,knotted mesh that keeps resistance down in the heavy tides that we tend to get round here.
Cheers,
Davey.

I'm with sand eel. I've not been doing this for long but I've landed a few nice size pike without a net. You're 1cm from the water and grabbing fish is no problem. The other point is also very valid, keep your kit to a minimum, this sport has enough fannying around built into it without adding more !!!

Actually, a net is one of the bits of kit I have been looking for - for many years! I have still to find one that suits the kayak though.

I just use my hands, for everything, tope, conger etc - but a short gaff for game fish. Yes, a lost fish is a downer, but nets create drag in the air if stowed upright ( the best way unless folding version - you find a decent, saltwater folder!)

I would also go for the Boga, Ijust don't have the odd £120 at the moment, and so have stuck with the hand landing for pike, bass etc. The one thing that worries me, is not the big fish, it is the little blighter, the one with a black dorsal fin and yellow tail.......weavers. Pliers and a towel are my defence. How do you deal with these nasties?

Just got back from another whiting bashing session, and while I was there I had a practise with the landing net (those cod will be here soon), as I had never used one in the kayak before. The advice re. mesh size is spot on as the one that I have has a small mesh and The tide really put some pressure on it. Other wise It performed well, being telescopic and folding. Not the strongest of nets but once a fish is netted in the water it can't get away.

Why have long handle telescopic???? don't think you need it.
Just bring the fish to the side and scoop it in. Like the game boys do with trout. The whole net should only be say 2 foot. It could be stored right behind you so wouldn't get in the way The mesh would be say 2'' I've yet to see one but haven,t really looked yet. maybe one of the course carp nets thats used for match fishing with a short carbon handle or cut off bank ali bank stick??????
Prefer to get the fish in the boat Then don't mind if I get caught in the net..... Got me fish.

Thanks
Bob.

Since you posted this I've had s look on ebay and google to see if there was such a thing as a monofilament landing net, which would solve the problem of hooks getting caught in the twine, which is a pain. No such thing seems to exist, so next time I'm in the garden centre I'm going to look at bird protection netting to see if that can be used.
You probably do not need a telescopic, and I don't use extended, but the one I bought was only £6 in aldi, so why not.

Hi all,
also been looking around for nets as I think it would be a useful bit of kit.
Found scoop nets of EBAY quite a few all around £6 plus postage.
Size 580mm by 300mm ish looks like the kind of thing.
Still looking.

Well after a lot of looking I've opted for a carp scoop net that are used in matches where you catch carp so it's large enough, has a nylon type of net, light.... When I get to try it I'll post the result but I do think a net would be a useful piece of kit,
I'll cut down a bank stick, put a grip on it.... Job done Hopefully.
But will still keep looking for the perfect net.
Just a note... This type of net is used to scoop carp out so have to be quite free flowing water through them.
Thanks for the input to all....

All depends how long your trace is, here on the East Anglian coast, traces of 10' are common, combined with a short yak rod, scooping isn't an option imo..........

I like a telescopic net, once you'vre lost a few half decent fish fish at the gunwales you'll understand why

Hi roller,
maybe an answer to the long traces you use is to put a zip boom (I think thats the name) its a boom which the line passes through pull the length of trace you want to fish then clip it between the small grip at the end of the boom. When you have a fish the line is pulled from the jaws, slides down to a stop swivel maybe 4' from the hook so now the weight and fish is only on a 4' trace. May help seen them used to some efect.
