Should my leader line by lighter test or heavier test, i.e. 15lb mono or 25-30lb mono?

Hi all,

I've seen varying opinions about reel line setups, but not really sure whats the right answer. Target species: Sea Bass, Pollock, and Wrasse. Fishing method: Lure Fishing. Currently have 20lb braid as main line, should my leader line by lighter test or heavier test, i.e. 15lb mono or 25-30lb mono, and why?

Please forgive my ignorance.

Cheers!

In conventional bait fishing the shockleader is there to prevent the terminal rig breaking away in the cast. So the convention is the shockleader should be matched to the weight ( i.e. shockleader should have breaking strain in pounds of ten times the lead weight in ounzes)
For lure casting the shockleader is there to provide the purpose of providing elasticity to the braid to minimise the chance of ripping the hook hold out. In some circumstances it also helps in providing a more robust length of line when abrasion from fish or rocks is forecast. Here the line be shut be higher than the braid. In other situation I use equivalent of lower be mono leader.
Others will not doubt have their own preferences

In my opinion, theres no right or wrong with this. Depends what sort of ground your on. You could go heavier if your fishing rough ground. Or lighter if your fishing flat ground. If you only want to get 1 spool, I would go heavier, then you could just fish with braid straight through if your fishing smooth ground.
Many good lure anglers dont bother with a leader at all, but most of them use green braid.

Hope that helps :)
