Hiya Mate .. welcome to the 'Addiction' !?!?;)

imho ... that's a good selection you've listed to get to you going.. on a variety of shallow and deeper marks. (one tip.. you may already know... the gateride lip is quite fragile so avoid wacking into any rocks/structure with it when casting... if you're unlucky enough to break it then I'd advise replacing with the fixed lip Zonk 120

Maybe think about adding a Luck Craft Gunfish 115 in ghost minnow.. and if you're fishing further west over the Tamar.. the Tacklehouse Vulture is a good distance topper choice (check out posts from Bruvahaze and Northcoast for colour options)

All good advice too from Matthew b and babelfish2 above.

Also there have been quite a few threads in past few months from new members asking for lists of 'favourite lures', so try a few 'keyword searches' as well.
And it's fair to say there's a tidy bunch of 'Devon rods' on here..... e.g 'Mattthew b' above, and 'hennie', 'john mitchell'...'Shane the fish, flatmatt, Joe-sw, GPSguru to name just a few (apols to the rest.. memory failure!) And the Cornish, Somerset and us Dorset gang.. all 'poaching' on each other's patches from time to time!
...........so I'd also search for any 'Catch reports' over the years and see what lures have worked/do work, along the Devon coastline.

Finally what ever you do... DON'T LOOK AT THIS THREAD link!?!?

Kerdiffs a proper hawk there spotting your location as devon and hes on point too.
South (?) Devon round to north cornwall on to wolly way its really mack and sandeels the bass eat. Stick to lures that represent them cast into clean surfy water over sand and rocks first light u will catch them. Dont stick pics of marks up with fish it will pi55 people off if its somewhere they fish. Best to find ur own grounds its more fun anyway.

My choice would be
Tackle house vulture no5 120mm 20grms.
Large Patchinko 500g that's the colour 500g 26grms.
Savage gear sandeel 23gms and 29grms lemon back.
Megabass spindle worm pro blue fished with jig head or weedless.

Dolive stick 6ins Wakasagi fished weedless read Henry Gilbys blog on this lure.
These lures have caught me a lot of bass all tried and tested.

Best advice mate....don't get hung up on different lures to add to your collection....it's bad for the wallet and you cannot buy bass....
Learn to fish the few recommended and you will catch.
You cannot go wrong reading posts from north coast, Hennie and mattb, and plenty of info from others on here.
Good post about the pics from Matt. We love to see pics, but of the fish, not the location lol...
Sure you'll be hitting some once the weather warms up.
Good luck,
Mart.

I think its good to have a selection of lures, particular because of the variety devon has to offer. I've caught in all conditions and I think thats where lure choice comes in...good luck casting a K2 in a 20-30mph SW, but the savage eel will do OK. I think the feed shallow is spot on and right colour for Devon...they love AYU.
Pearl does well. Surface is ghost lures for me. The smaller feed shallow (105) casts more consistently imo.
Orange or akaknin(?) for sun set
Best surface lure by far though is the Patchinko 2.
I would also add a redgill to the armoury, nice slim profile, great for searching the area in front of you.

Hi flatmatt,

Good advice mate, but where I was coming from, if you are just starting out, better to stick to a few (locally good weight, shape and colour) lures and put the time in, rather than have a bewildering amount of lures to start with. Obviously as you grow in experience, you can then widen the range of lures that are specific to different conditions?
I'm only speculating as I'm very much still in the learner camp lol.

Hello mate! Thanks for the reply, can't wait to catch my first bass on a lure! To get me started I've gone for a HTO Lure Game 10-40g so hopefully it's suitable! I'm based in Torquay so I have access to a number of different locations! Just need to find someone who's willing to show me the ropes

I live in Torquay! I'm new to lure fishing so I'm going to need explore a bit and find some marks locally! Yeah of course, last thing I'd want to do is give away someone's 'secret mark'

Good couple of tackle shops in Torquay. Hookz is relatively new but has some awesome stuff and love the vibe in the shop...not many shops have a 拢2 grand shark reel in stock or a 拢1k saltiga...great range of everything.

Lucky craft Sammy is my favourite surface lure, savage prey lemon back shallow diver has done well for me as well as the sand eels. Flying condoms always seem to do the trick in estuaries when all else fails, think outside the box, follow your gut feeling, one lure can catch really well at one mark and not get a sniff at another so it all come down to trial and error.

My first topwater bass was on a 拢2.50 tronix big bass popper 38grams.

Google maps, that's how I've found all the new marks I spent most of last year fishing. I located them, asked the Mrs if she fancied a romantic coastal walk but really I was just having a cheeky recce of the coast. I found some beautiful spots and had a good years fishing for a lot of species

I am in Torquay as well and one of the main things I have found out about the bay is that the fish don't really turn up until late in the season. The teign is good but the most popular spots are a bit like combat fishing with people lined up to catch schoolies, there are some good spots if you are willing to look and have a explore.
Give me a shout when the season starts and we will see if you can get your first on a lure.
