Hi,
Just to but in. I,m also looking at yaks and asking questions that about various things. It seems that some of the shops for these have open or trial days so you can try them. Stability was important but also comes speed and comfort etc. Look on the thread I posted I got some go info on about 6 types of yak. It also seems that there are shops where you can get a discount for mentioning that youre on this site and also November one place gives a discount. You'll find it on the site 10 -15 % off £650+ is nice. Also never tried a yak yet, some say its hard work. I just want to see how much!

I've just bought myself a 2 man sit on top kayak (Islander Paradise 2) as not only do I want to fish, but I want to take mates or the wife, or camping gear.
It's more expensive than the 1 man yaks, and harder to paddle on your own.
I would recommend that if you're not getting a purpose built fishing kayak, that you get one with plenty of flat parts so that it's easy to add rod holders, fish finder, gps etc.

Used the fish finder on Friday for the first time, and it was excellent at pinpointing the mackeral. Gives a lot of confidence.

In terms of stability, these are amazing, and much safer that sit ins as they don't fill with water, therefore you're safer if you go out further. Only once when surfing some pretty big waves at full speed did I manage to turn it over - but that was really trying. It's very easy to get back on too.

The Anglers Afloat Team are due to be doing a SOT safety / training day in Exmouth, have a look on their site. Going along to an event like this, even if not participating, you'll be able to see plenty of different yaks and speak to some of the experienced guys to assess what kit you may need.

It all depends on where you will be fishing , the type of fishing, distances to be travelled (on the water), you're physical size etc. The list of yaks being recommended will nearly always come down to:-

Ocean Kayaks - Scupper Pro TW (faster but less storage space), Prowler 13(good all rounder), Prowler Trident 13 (if you want fishfinder housing , rod pod etc.), Prowler Trident 15 , Prowler Big Game(very stable and buoyant , so suitable for the bigger paddler but also a slow yak)
Wilderness Systems - Tarpon 120 , 140 or 160 . The 140 is probably the best allrounder of the three and is a fast yak, the 160 is fastest but is 16' long at the end of the day. Wilderness Systems Boats tend to be more pricey than like for like from Ocean Kayaks.

Regards a fishfinder , you won't need one to start with , you may decide you don't need one at all , but they can be useful if also a GPS combo as you can store your marks etc., they can also aid in navigation ,but can never be relied on as a safety device , as being electronic they can fail. Your money would be far better spent on a VHF radio and training course to learn the protocol and obtain your license for use.

There is a list of essential safety equipment somewhere on the Anglers afloat site - have a read - it has been developed together with the RNLI and will give you a good idea of what t budget for.

(Plan on around £1k including the yak for starting off and you won't be far out)
Hope this helps
cheers

Just spotted your location Ade , so Exmouth obviously no good for you , still have a good read of that site, all the answers you need will be on there. There are also as number of Scotland based members , might be worth trying to get along for one of their meets to see the kit they use.
cheers

As a half way house between shore and 'proper' boat fishing a kayak is a brilliant thing, with much of the convenience of shore fishing; a kayak can be launched from almost any shore and can be easily transported and stored, but without the expense of a modern boat (£10,000 - £20,000) and can still get you out to many fish with just a 15 min paddle.
The thing I like is the contact with the fish, how often do you ever feel the bites when fishing from the beach. Of course the range of fishing available is less than that from a 18ft boat but that is compensated by the ease with which a kayak can be carried around the country to visit different venues.
My first 8ft 6in kayak was bought for surf play but proved to be quite capable of being used as a fishing platform, I have since aquired two 13ft perception freedoms which were only £385 each, These are not the most popular of fishing kayaks but are still very good. Will probably upgrade one next year and hopefully it will not have lost much of its value.
The kayak accounts for only about half of the expense, as neccessary safety and rigging equipment soon mounts up ie. dry suit £200+, VHF £100 to start with, but for summer use a £40 wet suit and a £5 waterproof mobile phone pouch will get things started. Used within its limitations a kayak is as safe as any other type of watercraft and there is plenty of advice to be found on the already mentioned web sites. Good luck, Steve.
