Two of our Club (Sportfishing Club of the British Isles) members – Eric Roberts and his girlfriend, Lisa - visited Loreto (Sea of Cortez) at the end of July. In previous years there have been reasonable runs of Sailfish off that coastline but this year they encountered, fishing with fly gear, loads of Dorado, some BIG, under the offshore rafts of Sargasso weed. They fished from the ubiquitous pangas, in company with others, and encouraged the fish to feed by chuming with live sardines. The fish ranged up to 40lbs; a reasonable challenge on a fly rod!

Tackle-wise they were using 10 weight rods matched to intermediate or sinking lines.

What else? It was effectively all Dorado, although they did see a free jumping Blue Marlin in the 400lb range targeting ……. Dorado.

Later in the week they moved further south. (Unfortunately I’ve forgotten the name of the resort.) That part of the trip though was relatively disappointing. They did catch some small Roosterfish inshore and offshore one of the smallest Striped Marlin, taken on a livebait, Eric had ever seen.

What Loreto did appear to have in its favour though was is relatively easy to get to – just a two hour flight from Los Angles, 2 1 /2 from Houston – and the guided pangas, at 250$US a day, were cheap to hire.

Eric and Lisa went independently but I did pick up from the Internet details of an organisation that would arrange inclusive packages. Based on two sharing - two days fishing, three nights accommodation, fishing licence and airport transfers – rates ranged from 5 to 600$US a person. Any rate there’re further details on this link - http://www.bajabigfish.com/reservations.html - and fishing reports on this - http://www.bajabigfish.com/reports.html. To that of course you need to add the costs of the International air fare, food and tips.

I added pictures of some of the fish they caught.

Nice report, Im glad to see Eric made it back from Vegas ,as it happens the whole trip was organised by myself and Toby. http://www.uksaltwaterflies.com/index.htm

Eric and Lisa were joined by eight other fishermen. We spent 10 days on Baja. Not bad for £1200 inc internal flights.

Were headed out again next year if anyone is interested. I should add that the first trip is pretty well sold out. Hense we may add a further trip , Back to Back , so to speak.

One thing to note. We were using 12 # Rods most of the time due to the number of Bull Dorado around.

Hers a couple more pix

Actualy thats Lisa looking at us from the Panga

Happy Days
