i decide to give friars a bash fishing 3 up and 3 down armed with mackerel, sandeel and squid. with first casts in the water i met my mate lewis (crazy fisher) who had already been fishing an hour before me and managed 3 doggies and a strap eel. it was'nt long before the action started with bites on both rods which resulted in doggie. this continued for a few more hours with a load of missed bites which seemed to be doggies. as high tide came lewis had a nice common eel of around the lb mark which snaffled up a whole squid and left his rig in an absolute state as they always seem to do.
with a few rattles onj the rod tips and then stopping i decided to put out a double sandeel, mackerel and squid bait and hit as hard as i could with quite a strong breeze behind me it flew out. within 5 minutes the rod lunged down, nearly pulling the rod out of the stand and stopped. it then did it again with the rod staying down and carrying on thumping hard so i picked it up and produced a solid strike to set the hooks home and immediately the rod buckled over with good solid thumps pulling down. i applied more pressure to try and get the fish moving and soon did..... after a good 2 minute scrap the fish surfaced a good 50 or so yards out and started spinning like mad - (you guessed it an big eel!!!) after a good tuscle an it starting to swim uptide more in the bay i got it turned back towards lewis who had gone down to get it for me....... by now anglers were standing next to me saying 'keep the pressure on boyo' and as it was right at lewis feet with it huge mouth open wide lewis grabbed the hooklength and wrapped it around his arm and lift6ed the eels head upto his headheight.......... then disaster struck :uhuh::blink::yucky::schmoll:............. the hooks pulled out and the eel just fell back into the water with a great splash and both watched what could of been a new PB for me swim back into the murky depths......
with my head down gutted i decided to put the same bait out again on both rods with no touch so called it a day.......
me and lewis packed up and i had a lift home........ cheers m8! :clap3::)
tight lines and all the best,
steffyenck.

Hi Sam,
Unlucky there mate. You`ll get him again!
Carrying around a Gaff can add weight to your box, so what I have is a length of strimmer cable about 3 ft long with a loop at one end and a large stainless hook with the barb filed down on the other. You can then get down to the water edge and hook it in the mouth and hoick it out! You don`t damage the fish too much this way. Better than gaffing them in the belly. Keep a cork on the hook for safety when not used.
Tight lines,
Rich
