Reposting a couple of questions from thread below in case any lhre experts can help out with fishing lures from kayak and small boat...

http://www.worldseafishing.com/foru...hing-without-sounder-other-tips-new-post.html

We've never tried jigging or popping but bought some lures and keen to try. Wanting to target spanish mackeral, barracuda, tuna and other pelagics up to 5kg. Over the next month we will be fishing in Bali, Lombok, Flores and the Banda Islands.

1. Without a sounder, how should we choose good areas for deeper trolling in a boat? Is the Navionics app worth buying or any cheaper alternatives?

2. How should we chose a good area to start casting the poppers? Do you only do this when you see surface activity? I also have a Zerek live shrimp so will use that under a popping cork.

3. Is it worth trying to cast the swimming hard body lures near surface activity or do surface poppers get the most bites?

4. How do you choose a good location to try jigging? If using Navionics - try near a part of bottom depth higher than surrounding areas suggesting some structure? With 200m of line I'm guessing we don't want to go any deeper than 80m to prevent being spooled?

Thanaks for any tips you have to help us reach our dream of catching a big fish with a lure!

I can't help with any of your questions and I'm not sure any one else on here can either. The "world" bit in WSF is a bit misleading. I am very envious though, it sounds like a great trip. It might be worth trying the boat fishing section. Good luck and have a great time

1. hit or miss, what i did when in the med was go at the top of the boat with a pair of binoculars and look for bird activity on the horizon. Birds means bait fish that means large fish hunting them underneath. any surface activty no matter how small means fish, even a floating log is cover for something.

2. Poppers use them with anything in "1." also and rock faces that go into the sea is a good area for a popper. big fish corner bait fish at these locations and wait there in cover. use them where 2 currents mix, creates a line.

3. i'd rather use a sub surface but each to there own. remember if there is surface activity there will be at very least a small bait ball in between the poppers and the fish. best to try and get under it for improved catch rates. if there is no birds and only lets say a log floating try a popper. you never know what's underneath.

4. structure gullies, drop offs. in shallow water you can tell by the water on top. If the water is creating waves or bulges there will be a sand bar or mass of structure like boulders underneath .if you drop a jig down you can feel what is down there. if you intend to fish for tuna and spanish macks i'd have more than 200m of line (personally i'd go 400m min) or just a dam strong reel and braid., not worth your gear failing on a nice fish. but since your in a small boat just whack the drag up and let it tow you around will tire it out same as a drag.

Thanks very much for the link Chris, unfortunately they are not accepting new user registrations at the moment but I'm checking out some other similar forums.

Wetweather, thanks for your input, there was some helpful tips there. I hadn't thought about using a higher drag and letting the boat be dragged. Especially true when in kayak.

I'm posting a little report to the original thread so if you're interested to read my successes click that link in my first post.

my suggestion,is to get a marine chart off the area u intend fishing,
the norm would be to fish the along the drop offs..the surface water will usually tel u off a change in the potography below the3 water ,
ie;swirls thats diff to the rest..
i fished for many years without any gadgets and finding reef or structure is not very hard at all ,just keep a keen eye on the water surface.
i now have all the gadgets for my kayaks, but seldom bother with them.

the first lesson is free the next few i might charge for.:)
