Can anyone tell me where the Mackeral come from that arrive in the North East of Scotland. Do they come round from Ireland and over the top of Scotland or do the come from South East England up to us? I am a bit confused as I thought they came from the South East of England and there are some suggestions that they arrive from the North. Had a look on the internet about migration routes and cannot find a thing except how to cook Mackeral. So when they do arrive I can barbecue/curry/smoke/steam/poach/grill but I need to satisfy my thirst for knowledge before I fill my stomach!

Hiya
as I am a blonde girlie i feel obliged to ask some stupid questions, and I hope someone can help.
1. Mackerel arriving in Ardrossan? I reckon end of May, anyone know different?
2.Where is the best spot to fish in arrochar ?
3.Going to Campbeltown in the summer. Need (I think) to get a beach caster(again for mackeral), I am only 5 foot. What size rod? Obvious innuendo replys not accepted!

I have never fished for anything else other than mackeral as I dont know how and am complete novice, any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.

Hi liz, welcome to the site, if its advice you need youve come to the right place, plenty of folk on here will keep you right.

As for mackerel, i wouldnt suggest that you need a beach caster for them, I personally find that takes the fun out of it and prefer to use a spinning rod or something a bit lighter. I even like to use kids rods with fairly light line and a single spinner as opposed to a set of feathers, you get a much better fight from them that way:)

There has been a few starting to show in the last couple of weeks around Greenock, (though i havent had any yet), but give it another 3 or 4 weeks and there should be plenty about then

Best of luck

LIZ QUESTION: 3.Going to Campbeltown in the summer. Need (I think) to get a beach caster(again for mackeral), I am only 5 foot. What size rod?

3 years ago I was ill and lost a lot of muscle. To continue fishing I had to look again at the casting rods I used. Did not want to spend too much either.
Looking around Glasgow Angling Centre I found this -

LINNEAEFFE MAGNIFICA 3904 GR.80-160 - a telescopic light beach rod.

It casts 1-4 ounces a long way. Very light, easy action, soft tip. And it looks like a nice carbon blank.
3 ounces and 3 small feathers fly out using a fixed spool, 12 pound mainline and 30pound leader.

The rod cost under £40 and also does for pollack, flounders and light surf work.
Not perfect but easy to use and worth more than it costs.

hi liz,
off the top of my head id go for a rod 10 /12ft bass or heavy spinner (you might want to fish for other things but a rod like that would allow for it without spoiling the mackerel runs ) exage range are good ,any reel that holds 200yds 12lb f/s
or target the macks specifically with say a trout outfit 9/10ft and 8/10lb line
if going to cambletown id go for the first option as it would allow for longer range
fishing
macks anytime next few weeks , got through that without one innuendo lol
good luck

personally id stay clear of arrochar and drive a few miles on to loch fyne , plenty fishing spots there , from cairndow , inverary, furnace and beyond minard .

expect mackerel , haddock, seatrout, dogfish, thornback ray, conger , codling , pollack..................... the list goes on :)
