Hi liz, welcome to the site, if its advice you need youve come to the right place, plenty of folk on here will keep you right.
As for mackerel, i wouldnt suggest that you need a beach caster for them, I personally find that takes the fun out of it and prefer to use a spinning rod or something a bit lighter. I even like to use kids rods with fairly light line and a single spinner as opposed to a set of feathers, you get a much better fight from them that way
There has been a few starting to show in the last couple of weeks around Greenock, (though i havent had any yet), but give it another 3 or 4 weeks and there should be plenty about then
