Hi Jake,

I think most people go feathering for mackerel on a 3 hook rig, so no bait needed.

As for bass, if your in the area with clear water you could go spinning for them or use big crab baits.

I read a few days ago that bass were taking 4 to 5 whole peeler crab which is a lot.

They would also take rag/squid, rag/crab, rag/mackerel or lug/squid, lug/crab, lug mackerel but the bast bait would be crab in my books.

Tight lines,

Small silver foil 3-5 hook strings are supposedly the quickest method to catch mackeral, but they will go for anything that moves no matter what colour it is.

If you have caught enough for your needs with a string of lures, but want to carry on fishing, then I change to a 28g silver lure with a very light spinning outfit and catch them one at a time. This can be much more fun that catching 3 or 4 at a time, as you are fighting one fish, rather than the 3 or 4 fighting each other on a trace, which can be like reeling in a dead weight sometimes.

A 1lb mackeral on light enough gear can be really good fun.
