Hi mate,
Mackerel are suckers for anything small and flashy and as mentioned, ready made feathers and lures with 4 to 6 hooks are a good bet.
If you want to use a bait which can score other fish as well, thus expanding your options, then you should try mackerel strips. Buy a large mackerel or two from a fish mongers or super market (not tackle shop as they cost a lot more!!!)
