Sorry, no experience of the newer EFi models only the older carb 4 stroke 25hp. But yes, Mariner, Mercury and Tohatsu are the same engines up to 30hp - all made by Tohatsu - just the paint and liveries are different - go for whichever of the three is the cheapest or has the most convenient/best local dealer.
Above 30hp Mercury and Mariner are still the same right up to the 300hp monsters.

well my local yamaha dealer has a 25hp fourstroke in stoke at old price but it will be a old model new but not latest spec . had a mercury 2.5 off him for my dinghy but that was made 2007 but reg this year seems he has a lot of old stock fine but if i am buying new i want latest model . so thats why i will go for a mariner 25EFI as i know they are the latest spec and prop is sorted to boat . the yam dealer provides standard prop. anyone else have similar experience ,or am i being too fussy , i think hre means well

I had a 2002 25F/S Mariner and now run a 100 EFI and have had no problems what so ever with either, in fact the 25 was a cracking little engine, very quite, sipped fuel and very reliable.

It's your money, he does not get someone buy an engine every day I would think so you go for the best deal you want!

I would'nt think you will go wrong with a mariner to be honest?

Is the Yamaha on offer an EFI? if it is, then I can't see there being a lot of difference between the Mercury/Mariner/Tohatsu or the Yamaha (unless you need to call on the warranty - in my experience a Yamaha warranty is not worth the paper it's written on) and I'd go for the best deal, but if the Yam is a carb engine, then go for the Mercury/Mariner/Tohatsu - EFI makes a lot of difference to ease of starting, smoothness of running and fuel consumption.
