Yesterday saw us hold the annual Species Hunt competion between the Danglers and the Welsh Tope Skate & Conger Club [WTSCC} on board Seren-y-mor out of Swansea. The weather was kind to us so we could fish both inshore and offshore marks although the easterly winds were going to have an their say.

After three years of taking abit of a beating the WTSCC boys put out a changed team with a number of new faces. Unfortunately their star angler didn't make the boat which put the comp into doubt. Dave Axtell who has for many years been associated [coaching?] with the Skewen club kindly agreed to stand in to make up the numbers for them. Now having had many years of fishing aboard Seren-y-mor with Dave his fishing prowess has always been something put down to rumour so we had the opportunity to find out what he was made of. By putting our two young top rods in Jason [gingerballs] and Aled [oarsman dan] on the same side of the boat as Dave we could sit back and see how the old master would deal with these two young bucks.

The morning was spent inshore but unfortunately the reef fish didn't want to play with just one Bream coming to Jason so the first part of the match was spent sorting the Huss out from the Mumbles Marlin. The match was evenly balanced when the tide turned and we headed for the Scar weather and the older members of the teams could show their skills on the Bank. Fishing was totally different with plenty of rays and tope racking up the points. Put it down to luck [or whatever] but Dave couldn't stop catching quality fish with only Aled fishing next to him just about hanging on until the final few minutes. Dave ended up catching the biggest Ray [double pointer], biggest Huss, biggest Tope [baby] and to finish us all off he landed the fine 2lb 12oz Gurnard shown below.

Steve, Gary and Cyril the other WTSCC members reponded to this leadership, fished well and gave us Danglers a good hiding winning by a mighty 26 points. So the Trophy remains in Swansea until next year when we can repeat this great day out in good company with loads of banter. Congratulations to all of the WTSCC boys and many thanks to Kevin for keeping the score and not being influenced by any of the older members of the teams [and family].

By the way, Dave, another Master Class when you come drift fishing with us next month?.

Good to see Dave can "walk the walk" , what a star to bring on as substitute.

I think you may have been wrong when you said to ignore all his advice over the years.:whistling

I think Ginger balls and Oarsman were overtired after a long season , follow the black pudding example - go for new blood .
