hi all, with winter on the way its time to dig out my origo meths heater,can you use industrial meths (white/clear) as opposed to the normal purple stuff, whats the differance apart from the colour, thanks

Methylated spirit is about 90% ethanol, 9.5% methanol, 0.5% pyridine plus methyl violet dye. Industrial meths has a few different grades but as long as it is 'industrial denatured ethanol' then you should be ok.

If it is industrial methanol then do not use it as it is more volatile.

the normal shop bought meths can smoke in stoves etc that is why Denatured Meths or alcohol
is used.
The other problem I believe is that being alcohol it is taxed the same as any other alcohol

Origo specify detatured alcohol. Regular meths is coloured and given a taste so winos don't drink it, problem is it smells a bit in the burner. If you can get denatured alcohol, use it. If in doubt try it out not in the boat!
