Best fished for bass on the flood with a decent surf from the bottom up – squid, sandeel, lug are best. You'll also get some small-eyed ray here but they're usually small – better at the Putsborough end of the bay.
Coombesgate beach can be good on a spring flood but at other times, not enough water gets over the sandbar.
Also, I've found it fished better on the last half of the ebb than the rest of the bay (still not that well!), with the chance of rays, small turbot, and also the odd dog & conger (up towards Morte)
If you walk out and around Morte point, you can fish any of the gulleys for Wrasse. Use crab for the better fish or king rag for plenty smaller fish.Bass are also caught here. It might be a bit early but spinning can be good.
