Hi Mike
You're right it is a Shad, a Twait Shad. The give-away is the shoulder blotch and the following line of dark spots.

Where did you catch it though - Yorkshire or whilst on holiday? It's just that they're not particularly common in northern waters.

Hi Guys, 1st thanks for the info:
I got it this morning on Skinningrove Jetty (Between Saltburn-by-Sea & Whitby) on the north-east coast, I thought this type of fish was a rarity around here, but I also saw another one caught at Whitby yesterday !
I will say though "I have been fishing now for over 30 years and these 2 are the only ones I have ever seen", so the greenhouse effect must be coming true
b.t.w. can you eat them ???

Here in the south west they are not allowed to be weighed in at competitions, or as club fish, and must be put back, as they are protected. Im not sure if this rule applies elsewhere though.
