Well my engine has given up the ghost, I was having Overheating problems and then problem starting so removed the plugs to do a compression test and bottom cylinder 125psi middle cylinder 100 psi and top cylinder 25psi, the top plug was full of water when removed. So pulled her out of the dock and back home but unfortunately the head bolts are not playing the game, when we tried to remove them while in the dock four snapped off and when I tried today all nice in my drive another few have gone,so I'll take the head off tomorrow (or try) and have a look at the pistons and cylinders and check for any damage before I try and remove the broken bolts but I'm thinking I'll be needing a replacement engine, 60 hp to 80 hp ish. So if anyone knows of any bargains please let me know.
Cheers Bill.

Probably owned by one of the people who claim outboards don't need to be flushed out regularly before you owned it. Hopefully you can get some money back selling it for spares if you cant get it fixed.
If you can get hold of a Yam F70 these are very reliable motors and I highly recommend them. Are you looking at secondhand or new ? Even a low hour secondhand engine can give you a heap of grief if it hasn't been well maintained.

Bill Higham Marine generally have a good selection of used engines and, in my experience, offer excellent service - the only place that would do a part ex deal when I looked to change my engine a couple of years ago, and really paid attention to detail.
Cambridge Outboards also generally have a good range of used engines…

Thanks I'll have a look now,but I saw a 70 vro with him a few days ago and he wanted about 2.5 k for a 30 year old engine which I thought was pretty steep.
But thanks for the help.

An older engine in good condition that has had a good going through will command a higher price from a dealer as they will want to recoup the cost of going though it to check it’s ok and will of course want to allow something for the warranty they give and of course want their profit.
But only the buyer can decide if that’s worth it - buying say an £1800 engine from a private buyer might prove more expensive than paying £2500 for an engine a dealer has gone through and added a warranty.
But a nearly new engine from a dealer probably offers better value compared to a private sale as those dealer costs can be much the same on a £2000 engine as they are on a £5000 engine.
The 80hp Merc at Bill Higham is easily the best of those that I posted, but the 75 Etec would probably be a good bet, and if 50hp is enough, that Tohatsu TLDI is excellent value and will sip petrol.

Unfortunately I can't afford that sort of money now day's but thanks for the input.
Are the 1990 ish Mercury 90hp 3 cylinder clamshell engines any good or the 90 v4 Johnson??
Sorry Bill cant advise on either of those engines . The 75 etec has been great and quite economical. Before that i had the tohatsu 50hp tldi which was very reliable and economical but a little bit under gunned for my predator 165 .
Good luck in your search 👍

Of those two I'd go for the Mercury - it was improved a bit 2 or 3 years later - it always had a reputation of being bomb proof but also very thirsty (as was the V4 Johnson) - and of course even the best engine can be showing issues after 33 years if not properly maintained.

Also worth working out whether the extra you'd pay on fuel and servicing (running to the same places, my brother, who had a 94 Merc 90 on a slightly heavier boat, would use pretty much twice the petrol of my Etec 90 - the Etec needs servicing only every three years - I used to change my gearbox oil every year though) would pay for the difference between an old tech and a new tech engine, which, fingers crossed, would also likely be more reliable.

If that 50hp Tohatsu TLDI would be enough power I think the equation between old tech and new tech would almost certainly add up even though it would be working harder of course.

For an old tech 60-90 two stroke though, for reliability I think you'd have to go a long way to beat a Tohatsu or Yamaha two stroke (in true Yamaha fashion, they copied the Evinrude/Johnson and made it better) - trouble is people know this and the engines are priced accordingly as you can see in the links I posted.

Also - bear in mind the parts from your expired engine might fetch a bit - that mid section and gearbox was used on quite a few models for a good number of years so parts could be in demand.

Hi and I'd love to try and bring her back to life and I would get good use out of her, is she a twin or three cylinder engine? I could possibly use any parts needed from mine to get her running, I have a new water pump kit here that I was going to fit to mine.
Where are you based please? And thank you for the offer.
Cheers Bill.
