I am by no means an expert on this but for cod I prefer a double pennel pulley rig, 3/0 and 2/0 hooks, with a rotten bottom for rough ground cod mate. As far as bait goes black lug or rag tipped with mackkie. Big baits work well so the cod can sniff it out, they have big mouths anyway. Watch for slack line bites as well and wait till you have a decent bend in the rod before striking.

cod? off the beach?? in july?? really?? are there any about this time of year?? i dont think so, could be wrong though.....
I think up in the far NE you can get them all year round off the beach. This sounds crazy, But I'm actually going Dungeness on Wednesday to fish the point over low water to try for a codling, as after this SW blow we've had I reckon there's a chance of getting one on a long cast. As I know a few people have caught codling in August last year off the point.
